2005 Vintage wine

2005 Vintage wine

Our opinion on the 2005 vintage: an exceptional vintage. The 2005 Bordeaux vintage was exceptional, offering a large quantity of elegant, high quality wines that can be kept for many years. Thanks to an ideal spring and low rainfall, the grapes ripened slowly and optimally, producing very concentrated and dense berries. The harvest was fantastic in all areas, with crops of exceptional quality. The harvest in Burgundy benefited from favorable weather conditions, resulting in very healthy, thick-skinned berries.

This allowed for a quick harvest, without the need for careful selection, and the finesse of the fruit was naturally reflected in exceptional wines.

The Northern and Southern Rhône produced a remarkable 2005 vintage, with fine, sophisticated wines that can be kept for many years. The reds from the Northern Rhône were particularly outstanding, with phenomenal Syrah offering concentrated aromas of rich black fruits and peppery spices, as well as smooth, velvety tannins.

Champagne also had some great years, but perhaps had a bit more difficulty than other regions and some wines lacked concentration. However, some wines are still great.

Our advice for buying a 2005 wine

The 2005 Bordeaux wines from both the Left and Right Banks achieved a perfect balance of fruit, tannin, alcohol and acidity. The red wines offered a generous core of ripe, opulent fruit, while the whites, while less popular, were also excellent, including outstanding examples of Pessac-Léognan.

The Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits regions of Burgundy produced superb wines in the 2005 vintage. Appellations that particularly shone include Fixin, Marsannay, Pommard and Nuits-St-George. The red wines were characterized by a concentration of red fruit rather than black fruit, while some appellations that tend to produce more austere wines surprised with sweet and mellow wines.

Among the wines of the vintage, those from Cornas and Hermitage in the Rhone Valley were particularly outstanding, offering a balanced structure ideal for long-term cellaring. The more prestigious estates of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas also produced excellent wines.
