expert's opinions

Continuing to edge closer to maturity, this stunner offers everything you want in classic Pauillac. Loaded with tobacco leaf, cigar box, cedar, red and black currants, forest leaf and smoke, the wine is full-bodied, concentrated, tannic and expressive on the nose and palate. It could take 5 years to reach its peak, but with 2 hours in the decanter now, it is already a stunning tasting experience.

Very dense colour, and youthful. Classic aromas - the blackcurrant and ripe plum flesh marrying to cedar and spice, a deal of tobacco ad smokiness, and gravelly earth in there too. What a lovely mouthful of wine this is, the seductive, luxurious weight and sweetness of the fruit beginning to flood through onto the palate, with an effortless, creamy and chocolatey weight of ripe tannin behind it. Lovely balancing acids, a wine with real charm, but also all the structure and depth in the world. Long, complex, but more than that, really quite beautiful.

Offers crushed currant and blackberry on the nose, turning to tar and liquorice. Full-bodied, with a solid core of ripe fruit and seamless tannins. Goes on and on. Very, very beautiful.

Jane Anson - Inside Bordeaux
A fine tannic frame, blackberry and cassis fruits, hints of cigar, rosebud and tobacco leaf. You will be able to find more generous examples of the 2005 vintage in Pauillac appellation right now, as there remains some austerity to the tannins through the mid palate, but this is a vintage that has proved stubborn over the past 15 years, and is only just starting to come into its own

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
The 2005 Pichon Baron has a dense ruby/purple color, sweet crème de cassis fruit, lots of cedar wood and forest floor, medium to full body, ripe tannin, and a long finish of a good 30+ seconds. This is a beauty and one of the most successful Pauillacs of this vintage. Drink it now through 2035.

64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc. Aged 15 months in oak barrels (80% new). Garnet with brick at the rim. Lovely depth of fruit on the nose – luscious and full. Smoke and cedar as it opens. Round and gourmand on attack with a touch of sweetness but still very fresh. Tannins solid and firm but wrapped in generous fruit. Long, persistent finish. A lot going on.

Château Pichon Longueville Baron

Château Pichon Longueville Baron is one of the great names of the Pauillac appellation, classified as a 2nd grand cru classé in the 1855 classification. A neighbour of Latour, this gravelly estate has reclaimed its place at the top since its acquisition by AXA Millésimes in 1987: its grand vin, dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, captivates with its depth, its aromas of blackcurrant, cedar and tobacco, and its remarkable ageing potential.

From the great successes of the late 1980s, such as the 1989, to the 1982 that has become legendary, through to more recent vintages such as the 2005 wine or the 2012 vintage, the wines of Château Pichon Longueville Baron rank among the most sought-after Pauillacs. The estate complements its grand vin with two second wines, Les Tourelles de Longueville and Les Griffons de Pichon Baron.
