A harmonious Pichon Baron at its peak - layers of cedar, plush tannins and plenty of leather and dried blackberries. Drinking beautifully now but should keep easily for another 10 years.

Still tannic at 17 years of age, but there is a lot to like about the wine. It's deep, concentrated and long, with freshness, flavor and intensity. There is a firmness to the tannins that reminds me a good version of a 1986 Pauillac.

Really delightful, if a little lacking compared to a better vintage. Great balance of primary and secondary notes, it will last a few more years but I think it might be near or at its peak now. Black fruit, cedar, dust, mint, and some leather and tobacco. The nose is particularly enticing, the palate also good but a touch less so. Medium body, tannins seem pretty resolved at this point. At its best maybe 90 minutes into a decant.

Very attractive summer-berry nose. Sweetly perfumed fruit. Bright, solid cherry fruit. Not great length, but good concentration suggests promise.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
A definitive Pauillac, the dense purple-colored 1998 Pichon-Baron offers up a sweet bouquet of licorice, smoke, asphalt, blackberries, and creme de cassis. In the mouth, the wine is elegant rather than full-blown, with medium body, sweet fruit, nice texture on the attack and mid-palate, and moderate tannin in the long finish. No, this is not as profound as the 1996, 1990 or 1989, but it is an outstanding effort. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2020.

Jancis Robinson September - 2013

Very firm and vigorous with lots of purple in the crimson and admirable freshness and structure still evident but clearly resolved enough, and ripe enough, to enjoy already. Both supple and subtle but still quite youthful. A success.

Château Pichon Longueville Baron
Château Pichon Longueville Baron

Classified a 2nd growth in 1855. The vineyard of Pichon Baron (as they called to distinguish it from its neighbor Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande) is situated right next to Chateau Latour on one of the finest vineyards in Pauillac. In the seventeenth century, Jacques de Pichon Longueville Baron, began to construct the vineyard of Pichon-Longueville. The reputation of the wine was established a few years later. The present castle was built in 1851 by Raoul de Pichon-Longueville. The wines of Château Pichon Baron come from this historic property. Resulting in full-bodied wine, rich in tannins, which are characterized by their finesse and elegance. Their length in the mouth is exceptional and they have a significant aging potential.
