Vinum Wine Magazine March - 2011
Vinum Wine Magazine
Of pronounced breed and incredible freshness, with the temperament, the juice, the structure, the density, length and fullness of the great wine that endures half a century: one of the most complete, greatest bottles of the year.

Jancis Robinson March - 2023
Jancis Robinson
71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot. Aged for 20 months in oak barrels (80% new). Garnet hue. Dark fruit, camphor and black olive on the nose, with stony notes too. Long and linear in style, with lovely freshness on the palate. Tannins are finely etched but present. A touch of sweetness, but not overly indulgent. More ‘classic’ than ‘sun-drenched’.

Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar Insider
A perfect example of classic Pauillac. The wine combines regal and stern attributes. There is power, waves of ripe, dark, juicy, deep fruits, and a wealth of tannins, but much of its character is still held in check. It's austere at the moment and while it will flesh out and soften with age, developing nuances and complexities, this is always going to be on the classic, structured, masculine side of the style range.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
A sleeper of the vintage, the 2008 Pichon Longueville Baron is one of the densest, most concentrated wines of Pauillac in 2008. Its inky-purple colour is followed by aromas and flavours of crème de cassis, blackberries, charcoal, coffee and liquorice. Exceptionally full-bodied, with velvety tannins and undeniable appeal, this gorgeous, well-proportioned, larger-than-life 2008 should age effortlessly for two decades or more. Given the realistic prices that remain for many 2008s, this is an obvious choice.

Jane Anson - Inside Bordeaux
Grilled caramel and liquorice on the nose, plump blackberry and blackcurrant fruits, sinewy tannins with touches of pencil lead and dark chocolate. This is signature Pauillac but an enticing version that welcomes you in. The Merlots make their impact here, because they were of such great quality in this vintage, fleshy and supple, giving width to the mid palate. 80% new oak. Jean-René Matignon technical director.

Chocolatey and deep, this has a hint of roses and a floral lift, while the creamy fruit and oak bring black fruit and chocolate into the mix. There is also a hint of graphite. The palate does not quite have the sheer luxurious weight of the ’09 or the pinpoint balance of the ’10, but this is another beautiful wine. Fine, grippy tannins emphasise the relative edge of this medium-bodied example, while fine acidity and structure give it a real sense of place and, I am sure, the ability to age gracefully.

Château Pichon Longueville Baron

Château Pichon Longueville Baron is one of the great names of the Pauillac appellation, classified as a 2nd grand cru classé in the 1855 classification. A neighbour of Latour, this gravelly estate has reclaimed its place at the top since its acquisition by AXA Millésimes in 1987: its grand vin, dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, captivates with its depth, its aromas of blackcurrant, cedar and tobacco, and its remarkable ageing potential.

From the great successes of the late 1980s, such as the 1989, to the 1982 that has become legendary, through to more recent vintages such as the 2005 wine or the 2012 vintage, the wines of Château Pichon Longueville Baron rank among the most sought-after Pauillacs. The estate complements its grand vin with two second wines, Les Tourelles de Longueville and Les Griffons de Pichon Baron.
