Big surprise. Dark ruby, with a garnet rim. Cassis, berry, tobacco, cherry. Incredibly complex. Full-bodied, incredibly velvety, with masses of fruit, currant, berry, tobacco. Never that highly rated but seriously good.

This wine turned out much better than I expected. At a young age, it was somewhat disjointed and seemingly lacked acidity, but there is no doubting its level of concentration. It has firmed up and lost some of its baby fat, and now reveals plenty of sweet, smoky, leathery blackcurrant fruit, a plush, opulent mouthfeel, and has reached full maturity. The colour is starting to brick at the edge of the glass.

Château Pichon Longueville Baron is a Bordeaux wine estate and Second Growth classified in 1855. The Pichon Longueville Baron vineyard (as it is called to distinguish it from its neighbor Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande) is largely adjacent to that of Latour, on one of the finest terroirs in Pauillac. It was in the 17th century that Jacques de Pichon, Baron de Longueville, began establishing the Pichon-Longueville vineyard. The wine's reputation was established within a few years. The current château was built in 1851 by Raoul de Pichon-Longueville. Château Pichon-Longueville is produced from vines in the estate's historic terroir. This results in full-bodied wines, rich in tannins, characterized by their finesse and elegance. Their length on the palate is exceptional and they have significant aging potential.
