2017 Wine

2017 Wine

The 2017 vintage will be remembered as a year of contrasts, marked by a historic frost episode but also by very fine quality in the terroirs that were spared. In Bordeaux 2017, the appellations Pomerol 2017, Saint-Émilion 2017, Pauillac 2017 and Pessac-Léognan 2017 produce 2017 red wines that are fresh, precise and elegant, whilst the Sauternes 2017 seduce with their purity and balance. In Burgundy, the Gevrey-Chambertin 2017, Vosne-Romanée 2017, Meursault 2017, Puligny-Montrachet 2017 and Chablis 2017 produce harmonious, digestible and luminous wines. In the Rhône Valley, the Côte-Rôtie 2017, Hermitage 2017, Cornas 2017 and Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2017 show a ripe, concentrated and expressive character. The Loire 2017 and Alsace 2017 complete this picture with taut, precise and aromatic whites.

The F.A.Q

Is the 2017 vintage a good year for wine?

Yes, but it's a contrasting vintage. Spring frost reduced yields in many regions, but the spared terroirs produced precise, balanced, elegant and aromatic 2017 wines. The greatest successes are found in Rhône 2017, Burgundy 2017, Pomerol 2017, Saint-Émilion 2017, Pessac-Léognan 2017, as well as in white wines from Loire and Alsace.

Vintage 2017: year of frost, low yields and great precision of wines

The 2017 vintage in France is first and foremost the story of a brutal spring. After a relatively mild winter and early budbreak, a series of severe frosts in late April affected a large part of the vineyard, particularly in Bordeaux, the Loire, Champagne and certain sectors of Burgundy. On a national scale.

Once this episode had passed, the vegetative cycle nevertheless followed a rather favourable trajectory. The summer of 2017 was generally warm and dry, without excessive heat waves, with sufficiently cool nights to preserve acidity. In several regions – Bordeaux, Burgundy, Rhône, Alsace – maturity was early, making 2017 one of the fastest vintages in recent decades. The harvest, which began early, took place in mainly dry weather, guaranteeing excellent sanitary condition of the grapes.

For the taster, the 2017 wine is characterised by confident freshness, often moderate alcohol levels, fine tannins and clear aromatics. The 2017 red wines do not seek to demonstrate power, but rather balance and precision. 2017 is a heterogeneous vintage in volume, but highly qualitative in the great terroirs, with great 2017 wines destined for very fine development.

Bordeaux 2017: historic frost, low yields and fresh style

The 2017 red wines from Bordeaux offer a more slender style than 2015 or 2016. The tannins are fine, the balance leans towards freshness rather than power, and the alcohol levels remain reasonable. In Pomerol 2017, the Merlots from well-exposed plateaux yield velvety wines, dense without heaviness, with a very fine expression of fruit. Saint-Émilion 2017 shows, in its finest crus, an elegant, chiselled face, carried by a well-integrated acid structure. On the left bank, Pauillac 2017, Saint-Julien 2017, Saint-Estèphe 2017 and Margaux 2017 fall within a classical vein, with ripe but not excessive Cabernets, fine aromatic definition and structures capable of ageing.

Iconic wines from Bordeaux 2017:

Château Ausone 2017 – Château Pavie 2017 – Château Trotanoy 2017 – Château Cos d'Estournel 2017 – Château Montrose 2017 – Château Léoville Las Cases 2017 – Petrus 2017 - Château d'Yquem 2017.

Ageing potential: the finest 2017 red wines from the Médoc and the right bank will be able to develop for another 10 to 20 years whilst already offering well-rounded tannins today; the Sauternes 2017 have an ageing potential of several decades.

Burgundy 2017: rediscovered generosity, finesse of red wines and brilliance of whites

After several years affected by hail or frost, Burgundy 2017 was experienced as a relief. 2017 is a very pleasant vintage, offering both quantity and quality, with expressive reds and elegant whites.

The warm spring favoured rapid and homogeneous flowering, whilst the summer, dry but without excess, allowed for regular maturation. The early but serene harvest yielded healthy and balanced grapes. The 2017 red wines from Burgundy, particularly in the Côte de Nuits, are distinguished by their freshness, appealing fruitiness and supple tannins. The Gevrey-Chambertin 2017 present a lovely density without heaviness, with notes of morello cherry, sweet spices and emerging undergrowth. The Vosne-Romanée 2017 reveal a floral and spiced register, very refined, whilst Nuits-Saint-Georges 2017 expresses a slightly more earthy structure but well-balanced. In the Côte de Beaune, appellations such as Volnay 2017 and Pommard 2017 show an accessible face, already charming.

The 2017 white wines from Burgundy are among the great successes of the vintage. Meursault 2017, Puligny-Montrachet 2017, Chassagne-Montrachet 2017 and the Chablis 2017 combine fine Chardonnay maturity with preserved acidity. The profiles are taut, saline, with precise aromatics of citrus, white flowers and fresh hazelnut.

Iconic wines from Burgundy 2017:

Corton-Charlemagne Coche-Dury 2017 – Meursault Les Charmes Comtes Lafon 2017 – Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos William Fèvre 2017 – Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses Georges Roumier 2017 – Vosne-Romanée Les Beaux Monts Domaine Dujac 2017 – Echezeaux Domaine Anne Gros 2017 - Domaine Arnoux Lachaux 2017.

Ageing potential: the great 2017 whites can develop serenely for 10 to 15 years; the well-born Côte de Nuits reds will enter a very attractive maturity plateau over the next 8 to 15 years.

Rhône Valley 2017: richness, warmth and great cellaring cuvées

In the Rhône Valley, 2017 is a warm and dry vintage, marked by reduced yields, particularly in the areas most exposed to drought, but the finest estates managed to work with these conditions to produce concentrated, rich and often spectacular wines.

In the northern Rhône, the Côte-Rôtie 2017, Hermitage 2017, Cornas 2017 and Saint-Joseph 2017 deliver profound Syrahs, with ripe tannins and intense aromatics. The wines combine ripe black fruits, violet, pepper and smoky notes, with tight structures balanced by sufficient freshness. This is a great 2017 wine vintage for lovers of cellaring Syrah.

In the southern Rhône, the Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2017 and neighbouring terroirs, such as Gigondas 2017 or Vacqueyras 2017, express very ripe Grenaches, marked by garrigue, spices and a generous texture. Here again, the low yields have reinforced the concentration. In rigorous estates, the heat translates into great breadth rather than heaviness.

Iconic wines from the Rhône 2017:

Côte-Rôtie Côte Brune Domaine Jamet 2017 – Côte-Rôtie Terrasses Jean-Michel Gérin 2017 – Hermitage Domaine Jean-Louis Chave 2017 – Châteauneuf-du-Pape Domaine de la Janasse Vieilles Vignes 2017 – Châteauneuf-du-Pape Domaine du Pégau Cuvée Réservée 2017 – CLOS SAINT JEAN Deus ex Machina 2017.

Ageing potential: the great northern and southern Rhône 2017 wines clearly fall within the long cellaring category, with 15 to 25 years of development possible for the finest cuvées.
