In Bordeaux, harvests were abundant and quality was excellent. Favored by a hot summer that led to grape over-ripening, the châteaux were able to produce very pleasant, fruity and well-balanced wines. The Sauternes are remarkable. Unctuous and honeyed, the Yquem 1983, Climens 1983, Fargues 1983 and Gilette 1983 châteaux offer exceptional wines. This was not the case in Gevrey-Chambertin, where wet conditions led to rot, but enough grapes could be saved. The red Burgundies are fruity and have these characteristic aromas of Pinot Noir. As for the whites, they are very full-bodied wines with high alcohol content and good acidity.

Several successes also for the 1983 Champagnes where the harvest was abundant and extremely healthy. The wines are rich, complex and opulent but they remain rare to obtain today. Finally, the Rhône Valley wines are exceptional in every way.

Our advice for buying a 1983 wine

In Bordeaux, exceptional wines could be produced. The wines from the Margaux appellation are even considered better than the 1982 vintage. The sweet wines are also excellent, fruity and refined.

In Burgundy, the wines obtained vary in quality, posing a challenge for most appellations. Focus rather on the reds from the Côte de Beaune as well as the wines from the Côte de Nuits which remain excellent. The whites tend to be very full-bodied, leaning more towards opulence than refined elegance due to the wet conditions at the end of the season.

The red wines from the northern Rhône are superb, particularly the wines from the Hermitage appellation.
