In the 19th century, "Cru Bourgeois" came from an old classification. Indeed, in Médoc wines, there were three classifications based on the social status of the winemaker: Crus Bourgeois, Crus Artisans and Crus Paysans.

The Crus Bourgeois classification was recognised in 1978. It was updated in 2003 and has since been known as "The Official Classification of Crus Bourgeois" and includes eight Médoc appellations. Some châteaux have been part of the Crus Bourgeois classification since its creation in 1932, such as Château du Taillan.
