Region Champagne

Champagne, world-renowned, is produced exclusively in the Champagne region.

Located in the far north, this region benefits from a cool and humid climate that imparts a typical beautiful acidity to Champagne. While 7 grape varieties are permitted in Champagne production, only 3 are predominantly used: Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, and Chardonnay. For white Champagnes, there are Blanc de Noirs (made from black grapes), Blanc de Blancs (made from green grapes), and Blancs. Similar to the classification of Burgundy wines, Champagne distinguishes its best parcels by classifying them as Grand Cru and Premier Cru.

Vintage Champagne is made solely from grapes harvested during the specific year.

Vintage Champagnes spend a minimum of 36 months in the bottle but are generally marketed after 4 to 10 years in the bottle. Made from powerful wines, vintage Champagnes require time to round out and best reveal their qualities. Over the years, the aromatic palette becomes more complex and evolves towards tertiary aromas such as honey, stewed fruits, and toasted notes.

In Champagne, the very good vintages are 1945, 1947, 1949, 1955, 1964, 1975, 1985, 1990, 1996, 2002, 2008. Among the distinguished Houses, we can mention Deutz, Dom Pérignon, Krug, Laurent-Perrier, Mumm, Perrier-Jouët, Pommery, Louis Roederer, Ruinart, Salon, Taittinger, Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin...
