The history of Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande

In 1850, upon the death of Baron Joseph de Pichon-Longueville, the Pichon Longueville estate was split between Baron Raoul Pichon (which would become Château Pichon Baron) and his three sisters, thus forming the Pichon Comtesse estate. One of the three sisters, Virginie Pichon de Longueville, wife of Count de Lalande, would give the definitive name to the château known today.

In 1925, the property was purchased by Louis and Édouard Miailhe, who became the new owners after the successors of the Pichon Longueville family. From 1978, Édouard Miailhe's daughter, May-Éliane de Lencquesaing, gave new impetus to the estate and promoted Pichon Comtesse wines around the world.

In 2007, the Champagne house Louis Roederer, led by Frédéric Rouzaud, acquired the property. The latter gave new impetus to the estate by reorganising its vineyard and equipping it with modern facilities, in order to raise it to the rank of the best Classified Growths of Pauillac.

What are the characteristics of the wines from Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande?

The vineyard covers a total area of 102 hectares, of which 11 are located in the commune of Saint Julien, a particularity for a Pauillac appellation wine. The vines are on average 35 years old. The grape variety composition of Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande consists of Cabernet Sauvignon (64%), Merlot (27%), Cabernet Franc (6%) and Petit Verdot (3%).

The terroir consists of gravel resting on a clay-sandy base. This allows for good drainage of excessive rainfall while storing it in a natural reservoir formed by the clay. The château also benefits from a climatic advantage due to its geographical position, located between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gironde estuary, this vineyard experiences regular and moderate temperature variations, which protects it against frost and excessive drought.

The wine has a purple-red colour and exudes aromas of red fruits, spices and ripe tannins. It is distinguished by its balance and intensity, with a generous tannic structure and woody notes.
