The history of Château Brane-Cantenac
Château Brane-Cantenac, a 75-hectare estate, lies at the heart of the prestigious Margaux appellation in the Médoc vineyards, on the left bank of the Gironde estuary.
Château Brane-Cantenac‘s red wine is ranked Second Grand Cru in the 1855 Bordeaux wine classification. The estate was producing one of the Médoc‘s most famous wines long before this classification.
The winery, formerly known as "Hostein", was established in the 18th century. After the French Revolution, it became the property of Baron Jacques-Maxime de Brane, who bequeathed it his name. It was then bought by the Gorce family, and after several changes of ownership it was finally inherited by Lucie Lurton in the 1950s. It has now been in the Lurton family for 4 generations.
What are the characteristics of Château Brane-Cantenac?
Château Brane-Cantenac boasts an extremely rich terroir. The vineyard is planted on an illustrious plateau with a gravelly, mineral-rich soil, allowing excellent water drainage and deep rooting of the vines.
Alternative ecological viticulture combining organic and biodynamic farming, and ultra-reasoned pest management has been adopted by the estate for several years.
The majority of Château Brane-Cantenac‘s grape varieties are Cabernet-Sauvignon, followed by Merlot, Cabernet-Franc and Carmenère. Carmenère is an ancient local grape variety recently replanted in the Bordeaux vineyards to cope with climate change, which is greatly modifying the terroir.
The Château produces 3 different red wines as part of a sustainable viticulture approach: the grand vin Château Brane-Cantenac, the second wine Baron de Brane, and the third wine, called Château Notton and made from grapes grown on young vines.
With its territory of exceptional potential and its vines planted on the Brane plateau, Château Brane-Cantenac produces a racy, complex wine with good aromatic length. It combines freshness and suppleness for a perfect balance.
It has original aromatic characteristics, blending smoky and woody notes. The wine of Brane-Cantenac is described as elegant and velvety, with great regularity in the vintages and great freshness on the palate.
