2015 Wine

2015 Wine

Our opinion on the 2015 vintage: an exceptional year offering great wines. The 2015 vintage was remarkable for the entire Bordeaux region, but especially for the Right Bank. Benefiting from a generally sunny year, with a hot summer and well-distributed rainfall, the grapes ripened in optimal conditions, offering high-quality wines with significant ageing potential. Each appellation produced quality wines, with the best vineyards producing low yields but intensely flavoured wines. In Burgundy, the 2015 vintage was exceptional, with relatively early but very successful harvests, where most grapes reached optimal maturity.

The white grapes were picked before the rain arrived, which interrupted the harvest for red grapes. Despite fears that the fruit might be too ripe, the wines were remarkably intense rather than excessive.

It's one of the best years for the Rhône Valley, where both the north and south experienced ideal growing seasons. The harvests were phenomenal for both white and red wines, making this year a great success. The 2015 Rhône reds are even comparable to those of the 1990 vintage.

In Champagne, 2015 is a legendary vintage, recording the warmest growing season ever. Although yields were below average, the wines produced were simply stunning. The conditions favoured excellent quality Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, offering remarkably balanced wines rich in intense fruit.

Our advice for buying a 2015 wine

The wines from the Right Bank appellations, Pomerol and Saint-Émilion, received much praise in Bordeaux for their opulent, intense and fruity character. The Left Bank appellations such as Margaux and Graves produced classic wines, both red and white.

Burgundy red wines are well-structured, intense and refined with a beautiful concentration of fruit. The whites are also excellent, although slightly less homogeneous, with riper fruit flavours and less pronounced acidity than in other years.

In the northern Rhône, Syrah was superb with powerful and classic wines coming from Cornas, Saint-Joseph and Côte-Rôtie. Hermitage and Crozes-Hermitage also produced great wines, characterised by complex notes going well beyond their fruity character.

The 2015 vintage Champagnes drink very well now but the best are likely to age and develop even further.
