Château La Mission Haut-Brion has its origins in the 16th century, when the estate was managed by the Congregation of the Mission, from which it takes its name. Very early on, the vineyard distinguished itself through the quality of its wines, appreciated well before the great Bordeaux classifications. Unlike the crus of the Médoc, La Mission Haut-Brion belongs to that elite of estates whose reputation was built outside the 1855 classification, before being officially recognised as Cru Classé de Graves in 1959.
The estate evolved for a long time independently of its prestigious neighbour Château Haut-Brion, developing its own identity, often associated with more powerful and more structured wines. Its acquisition by the Dillon family at the end of the 20th century marked a new era, with significant investments in infrastructure and a rise in qualitative precision, without denying the historical DNA of the château.
The vineyard of La Mission Haut-Brion extends over carefully selected parcels in the heart of the Pessac-Léognan appellation. The soils are composed of deep gravels, mixed with clays and sands, resting on a perfectly draining subsoil. This geological diversity promotes homogeneous ripening of the grapes and gives the wines their characteristic structure.
The temperate climate, influenced by the proximity of the Garonne and the surrounding forests, helps preserve freshness and balance, even in warm vintages. This unique terroir explains the intense aromatic signature and depth of the estate's wines.
The grape varieties are predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Franc. For the whites, Sémillon dominates, combined with Sauvignon Blanc. The management of the vineyard favours controlled yields and rigorous selection of the grapes.
The vinifications are conducted with great precision, without seeking excessive extraction. The ageing in oak barrels accompanies the wine in its evolution whilst respecting the expression of the fruit and the terroir. The wines of La Mission Haut-Brion are distinguished by a dense texture, powerful yet fine tannins, and a deep aromatic palette blending black fruits, smoky notes, spices and mineral nuances with time.
The wines of Château La Mission Haut-Brion are among the greatest ageing wines of Bordeaux. In great vintages, they can evolve harmoniously over several decades, developing remarkable complexity. Their consistent quality and assertive style earn them constant recognition from international critics and a prime position in the fine wine collectors' market.
Within Pessac-Léognan, Château La Mission Haut-Brion occupies a special position, often compared to the greatest crus of the region. It forms part of a landscape of excellence alongside major estates such as Château Haut-Brion, the historical reference of the appellation, Château Pape Clément, recognised for its full-bodied and modern style, and Château Smith Haut Lafitte, emblematic of the qualitative renaissance of Graves. Through its strong identity and inimitable style, La Mission Haut-Brion fully contributes to the international prestige of Pessac-Léognan among the great appellations of Bordeaux.
