To sell your wine bottles, what other solutions are there?
There are many solutions for selling your wines: friends and family, private sales, consignment, local wine merchants...
If you're a risk-taker, auctions can be an alternative. However, selling your wines at auction comes with risks that you should be aware of before diving in:
- Substantial fees are applied to both the seller (about 12%) and the buyer (about 24%). For example, a bottle sold for £250 at auction will actually earn you £160
- Price uncertainty, you cannot predict the hammer price which may also be to your disadvantage...
- The costs of transporting the bottles to the auction house are at your expense
- No guarantee of selling your wines. It frequently happens that wines don't find a buyer. In this case, the costs for retrieving your bottles are at your expense
- Risk of non-payment: There is always a risk that the buyer may not pay their invoice.
In summary, auctions can be an effective way to sell your wines, but it's important to carefully weigh the risks before committing.
