Gevrey Chambertin Appellation
The Gevrey-Chambertin appellation
Since 1936, Gevrey-Chambertin has been an Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC). Gevrey-Chambertin is an appellation located in the commune of Gevrey-Chambertin. The vineyard covers over 410 hectares, making it one of the largest vineyards in Burgundy. South of Dijon, at the foot of the Lavaux valley, the grand crus: Chambertin, Chambertin Clos de Bèze, Chapelle-Chambertin, Charmes-Chambertin, Griottes-Chambertin, Latricières-Chambertin, Mazis-Chambertin, Mazoyères-Chambertin and Ruchottes Chambertin (which are separate appellations in their own right) occupy the hillsides.
The Burgundy Premier Crus from the Gevrey-Chambertin vineyard are located on gravelly soils to the north. And it's on the brown limestone soils of the foothills that the village appellation extends. The Gevrey-Chambertin appellation wines have aging potential ranging from 3 to 15 years.
