Château Latour is one of the oldest and most influential estates in the Pauillac appellation. Classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé in the official classification of 1855, it embodies a rigorous and architectural vision of great Bordeaux wine, based on consistency, depth and longevity. Closely linked to the Gironde estuary, the vineyard benefits from particularly favourable natural conditions for regular grape maturation and precise terroir expression.

The style of Château Latour is based on a predominance of Cabernet Sauvignon, giving rise to powerful, dense wines built to express themselves over time.

Among the iconic vintages of Château Latour are notably: Château Latour 1945, Château Latour 1961, Château Latour 1990, Château Latour 1996, Château Latour 2000 and Château Latour 2009

History and identity of the château

A vineyard identified as an entity in its own right from the late 17th century, Château Latour experienced a decisive turning point under the impetus of Alexandre de Ségur, a major figure in Médoc viticulture. It was in the heart of the 18th century that the estate truly took off, driven by growing demand from the English aristocracy for high-quality red wines. From this period, Château Latour clearly distinguished itself through the structure and consistency of its wines.

Commercial archives illustrate this early recognition: in 1767, the price of a barrel of Château Latour reached an exceptional level, equivalent to twenty times that of a barrel of standard Bordeaux wine, a sign of an already extraordinary positioning before any official classification. When the 1855 classification was established, Château Latour was logically placed at the rank of Premier Grand Cru Classé, alongside Château Margaux, Château Lafite Rothschild and Château Haut-Brion, definitively consecrating its founding role in the history of the great wines of Bordeaux.

In the mid-20th century, the dispersal of the estate due to the large number of heirs in the Ségur family led to the sale of the property. Château Latour then came under the control of British financial groups for nearly three decades, before returning to French ownership in 1993, with its acquisition by François Pinault. This stage marked the beginning of a new phase, characterised by a long-term vision and a profound modernisation of the infrastructure.

Under this impetus, Château Latour has become a pioneer in several respects. The estate is now the only Premier Grand Cru Classé managed entirely through organic farming, certification obtained in 2018, and also the only one to have chosen not to sell its wines en primeur, a decision applied since the 2012 vintage. These directions reflect a clear determination to favour the maturity, readability and consistency of the wine over the long term.

Terroir and viticultural environment

The vineyard of Château Latour is located at the southern end of the Pauillac appellation, in close proximity to the Gironde estuary. It rests on deep gravel soils combined with a clay subsoil, offering a natural balance between drainage and water reserve. This geological configuration, rare in its homogeneity, gives the wines a dense structure and great stability of expression, even in climatically contrasting vintages.

Production philosophy and wine style

The grape variety is largely dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The vineyard work is based on extremely rigorous parcel selection and controlled yields. The vinifications favour precision and purity of expression, with measured extractions and barrel ageing aimed at supporting the wine's structure without altering its balance.

The style of Château Latour is characterised by a powerful tannic architecture, remarkable depth and an ability to unfold slowly over the years. The wines offer a structured and mineral reading of the Pauillac terroir, where freshness and density are durably balanced.

Second wine and range organisation

Château Latour produces a second wine, Les Forts de Latour, from distinct parcels or younger vines. This cuvée benefits from the same level of technical and stylistic rigour, whilst offering a more accessible expression of the terroir. A third wine, Pauillac de Château Latour, completes the range and allows for a particularly strict selection for the grand vin.

Perspective within the appellation

Within the Pauillac appellation, Château Latour is part of a wine-growing environment of exceptional density. Estates such as Château Pontet-Canet, Château Lynch-Bages, Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande or Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste illustrate the diversity of styles and possible interpretations of the Pauillac terroir. In this context, Château Latour stands out through a more rigorous and structural approach, constituting an essential benchmark for understanding the most enduring and architectural dimension of the appellation's great wines.
