Tasting note: 1968 is one of the smallest vintages of the decade along with 1963 and 1965. Caramel nose, round on the palate without any dryness, although a bit short.

Grape variety / Blend: Cabernet Sauvignon (~75%), Merlot (~23%), Cabernet Franc (~2%), Petit Verdot (~2%) (variations may occur from one vintage to another)

Maturity: Mature wine

Food and Wine Pairing: Château Latour wines pair perfectly with beef, game, and poultry in general. We can also mention dishes such as truffle omelette, Pauillac suckling lamb, or porcini mushroom ravioli. For cheeses, Maroilles will pair perfectly with this red wine.

It's hard not to be romantic about wine when you find a label-less Châtour Latour, are worried for about two months regarding whether it'll drink well or not, and then you wind up with a 96 point wine on the night when you do eventually open it. The first bottle of five on the night in a tasting that saw us cover four decades of Bordeaux wine (60s-90s) and this stole the show. The nose was an aromatic treat, packed with scents of spice, cedar, toasted coconut, grapefruit, tobacco and oregano. The tannins from the hot 1968 summer mellowed down to produce a palate that had incredible for its age as notes of redcurrants and crème de cassis were balanced out with peppercorn, meat and a tinge of leather across some reasonably good acidity. Just an absolute joy on the night and shows you the beauty of mature Bordeaux.

The colour alone, shading into brick red, indicates a clearly mature wine, which the aroma confirms. The initially slightly balsamic spicy notes with hints of dark chocolate and coffee quickly tip in a slightly oxidative direction. On the palate, an excellent structure saves the performance of this great wine from a small year.

Château Latour
Château Latour

Château Latour is a Bordeaux wine estate producing wines under the Pauillac appellation. First Growth in the Official Bordeaux Wine Classification created in 1855. It is undeniably a reference in the Médoc.

Created around 1680, the Château Latour vineyard is one of the oldest in the Médoc. At the heart of the estate, the main plot, called "l'Enclos", consists of 47 hectares of old vines that are preciously maintained, as they are the only ones capable of giving birth to the "Grand Vin". The 18 hectares of external plots, vine stocks less than 10 years old and potentially declassified wines produce the estate's second wine, "Les Forts de Latour". Château Latour wine is an example of consistency regardless of the vintage quality. Firm, tannic and concentrated in its youth...

Latour is the very example of excellence, in both good and bad years. Among the greatest vintages, the château's finest achievements: 1920, 1929, 1949, 1955, 1959, 1961, 1970, 1982, 1990, 2000.
