Saint Joseph Appellation

The Saint Joseph Appellation

Saint Joseph is a French controlled designation of origin (AOC), located in the northern Rhône region. On the right bank of the Rhône and to the north, the appellation extends over more than 25 communes in the Loire and Ardèche departments. Saint Joseph covers nearly 1,200 hectares of vineyards. The vineyards benefit from a temperate climate with continental and Mediterranean influences.

Saint-Joseph wines are predominantly red wines, produced from Syrah. But the appellation also produces white wines using Marsanne and Roussanne grape varieties. The key players in this appellation are undeniably the 130 winemakers who work daily in the vineyards to produce great wines. The largest producers of Saint-Joseph are: Alain Voge, Delas et Frères, Chapoutier... The best vintages of the appellation are 1945, 1962, the 1982 vintage, 1996 and the 1991 vintage which are considered excellent. The 1985 vintage is exceptional and the wines from 1978 and 1999 vintage are the best achievements of the century.
