The history of Château Pontet-Canet

In the 18th century, Jean-François de Pontet, an aristocrat and high magistrate, acquired a few acres of land north of the village of Pauillac. He planted a vineyard there and gave his property the name Château Pontet-Canet.

A century later, the estate was classified as a fifth growth in the 1855 classification. It was purchased in 1865 by Henri Herman Cruse, an influential Bordeaux merchant. Under his direction, Château Pontet-Canet gained a worldwide reputation.

In 1975, the estate was bought by Guy Tesseron, a winemaker and Cognac merchant. His son, Alfred Tesseron, succeeded him in 1994. Uncompromising on quality, he chose to convert the estate to organic and biodynamic farming.

In 2015, Justine Tesseron, Alfred's daughter, took over the management of the estate. She continues her father's work by committing to sustainable and environmentally friendly viticulture.

What are the characteristics of the wines of Château Pontet-Canet?

Château Pontet-Canet is located north of Pauillac, between two classified growths: Mouton Rothschild and Lafite Rothschild. The estate's vineyard covers 81 hectares, spread over about a hundred plots. It has approximately 800,000 vines, oriented towards the Gironde estuary.

The grape varieties consist of Cabernet Sauvignon (65%), Merlot (30%), Cabernet Franc (3%) and Petit Verdot (2%).

The Pontet-Canet vineyard is situated on Günzian gravel, a soil composed of gravel, sand and clay. This soil is rich in nutrients and minerals, which gives the wines their unique character.

The vineyard is managed using organic and biodynamic farming methods. This environmentally friendly approach allows for the production of natural, high-quality wines. The vinification is traditional. The grapes are hand-harvested and vinified in concrete vats. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels for 16 to 20 months.

The wines of Pontet-Canet are known for their elegance, complexity and longevity. They present aromas of black fruits, red fruits, flowers, spices and undergrowth. Their texture is velvety and their tannins are silky.
