Our opinion on the 2009 vintage: a truly great vintage. The 2009 Bordeaux vintage is legendary, and the red wines of the 2009 vintage can be compared to the 2005 vintage. All appellations offer outstanding wines. The Médoc benefited from endless sunshine, as did Saint Emilion and Pomerol, which favoured the harvest. The 2009 Sauternes are exceptional. Indeed, the quick harvest at the end of September produced spectacular wines, rich, honeyed, spicy and balanced by beautiful acidity. A very fine vintage for Burgundy as well. The red wines have good maturity and are perfumed with aromas of well-ripened fruit, with a beautiful structure.

The 2009 vintage in the Rhône Valley was fantastic, both in the north and south. The weather conditions during the harvest were excellent, resulting in very great wines for long-term aging, particularly in the Côte Rôtie and Hermitage appellations.

Finally, in Champagne, the 2009 vintage is also a great success. The 2009 champagnes present rich and ripe orchard fruits, while maintaining a present acidity.

  

Our advice for buying a 2009 wine

In Bordeaux, the red wines of 2009 are sumptuous, bold and rich. The left bank was particularly successful. The white wines are also superb, especially the sweet wines from Sauternes and Barsac.

In the Rhône Valley, the wines are opulent, rich, with depth of colour and velvety tannins. Châteauneuf-du-Pape was particularly outstanding.

In Champagne, overall, the wines are very good, and the best examples are likely to still drink well now.
