In Bordeaux everything was going well until rain arrived at the end of the season. Some water-laden grapes produced light wines, but the great estates managed to produce very beautiful wines thanks to rigorous selection. The Saint Estèphe and Saint Julien appellations (Ducuru Beaucaillou 1973) produced beautiful wines, but there were other successes elsewhere such as Pétrus 1973, Latour 1973 or Domaine de Chevalier 1973.

In Burgundy, despite a hot summer that favoured grape ripeness, the end of the season was very rainy. Yields were high but red Burgundy wines are diluted. White Burgundy wines stand out, being pleasant, supple and refined.

A satisfactory 1973 vintage for Rhône Valley wines. Some wines from Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage and Châteauneuf-du-Pape are particularly successful. Champagne is the big winner of the 1973 vintage. Round, balanced, 1973 is one of the greatest Champagne vintages.

In Bordeaux, the best wines from the 1973 vintage are in the Saint Estèphe, Saint Julien, Pomerol and Graves appellations with Château Calon Segur 1973, Château Pape Clément 1973 and Château Pavie 1973. The sweet wines are supple and elegant like this Château d'Yquem 1973. For 1973 Burgundy wines, as in the Rhône, we advise you to look at the best producers who would have stood out that year. The 1973 white Burgundies can be a good choice and should be favoured. Refer to expert tasting notes to get an idea. You will find expert ratings (Robert Parker, Michael Broadbent, JM Quarin...) for each wine when they have been able to taste the wine in the past.
