In Bordeaux, everything was going well until the rain arrived at the end of the season. Some water-logged grapes produced light wines, but the great estates managed to produce very fine wines thanks to rigorous selection. The Saint Estèphe and Saint Julien appellations (Ducuru Beaucaillou 1973) produced beautiful wines, but there were other successes elsewhere, such as Pétrus 1973, Latour 1973 or Domaine de Chevalier 1973.

In Burgundy, despite a hot summer that favoured grape ripeness, the end of the season was very rainy. Yields were high but the red Burgundy wines are diluted. White Burgundies stand out, being pleasant, supple and racy.

A satisfactory 1973 vintage for Rhône Valley wines. Some wines from Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage or Châteauneuf-du-Pape are particularly successful. Champagne is the big winner of the 1973 vintage. Round, balanced, 1973 is one of the greatest Champagne vintages.
