Chance had it that I tasted this wine during a recent dinner. After Sociando-Mallet 90, Fieuzal 88, La Conseillante 88, something else was needed for after the cheese and our insatiable curiosity. The originality of the style, the mellowness that only age brings and the astonishment created by a vintage that is no longer talked about delighted us. One must never forget the extraordinary longevity of Latour wines, even in vintages considered average. Colour. Dark red, good intensity for the year, slight evolution. Nose. Clean, intense. Mocha, cedar, blackcurrant, smoky. Swirling. Quite powerful. Soft and smooth attack developing on a round and very flavourful structure, with a slightly relaxed texture but very aromatic, fresh, spicy. Melted tannicity. Finish evoking cream, metal, spices and blackcurrant. Drinks marvellously well. Its youth is astonishing.

Served from ex-château magnum at the Academie du Vin dinner, the Latour '73 must surely be one of the wines of the vintage, which is not saying a lot considering it was one of the worst growing seasons ever. Deep in colour, the nose is closed at first and then opens to reveal a curious but not dislikeable scent of kidney beans and melted tar. The palate is medium-bodied with chunky but not brutish tannins. Yet it is unapologetically masculine but uncharacteristically bucolic. There is decent freshness here – an enjoyable off-vintage First Growth that made good “old bones”.

One has a bit of apprehension before opening such a bottle. This wine is nearly 40 years old and comes from a rather poor year: 1973. The wine of all dangers. And yet... The colour is beautiful. The nose too. Not exuberant but fine. No traces of oxidation or "old cellar". The palate is interesting, acidity dominates slightly, the tannins are well integrated. Less lean than imagined. This wine is soft, mature, charming.

Château Latour

Château Latour is one of the most iconic estates of the Pauillac appellation and a founding reference in the history of Bordeaux viticulture. Its name appears as early as the 14th century, linked to the presence of a watchtower on the Gironde estuary, whose proximity still profoundly shapes the identity of the vineyard. As early as the 18th century, the wines of Château Latour were recognised for their consistency and their capacity for ageing, establishing themselves among the greatest wines of the Médoc.

Classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classé in the official 1855 classification, Château Latour holds a central place at the very top of the Bordeaux hierarchy. The estate is built on a particularly homogeneous terroir of deep gravels, dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, which lends the wines a powerful structure, remarkable depth and a great consistency of expression.

The signature of Château Latour is defined by a dense tannic architecture and an exacting construction, favouring precision and longevity over immediate seduction. The estate has withdrawn from en primeur sales: it keeps its bottles at the property and releases them only at maturity. This patience is evident in its legendary years — from the 1945 vintage to the wine of 1961, from 1982 to 1990 through to 2009 — all of which illustrate the estate's ability to express with consistency the excellence of the Pauillac terroir and the singularity of its style.
