The Hermitage appellation

Hermitage is an Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée. It can also be designated under different names such as "Ermitage" or "L'Ermitage". In addition to its AOC status, Hermitage has the European PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) label. Located in the northern Rhône wine region, on the left bank of the Rhône, it covers nearly 136 hectares of vineyards in the communes of Tain-l'Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage and Larnage in the Drôme department.

Under this appellation, winemakers produce both red and white wines. The grape varieties harvested are Syrah, Marsanne, Roussanne, Bergeron and Shiraz. Its semi-continental climate with Mediterranean influences allows for the production of quite exceptional wines. The soils are sandy-clay and contain limestone and granite. Hermitage red wines have a beautiful ruby colour and excellent brilliance. On the palate, the tannins are remarkable, with tight grains, a certain roundness and a long finish. Hermitage white wines are delicate with a pale gold colour and floral notes on the nose. On the palate, there is also a certain roundness and a long finish with notes of sweet spices.

The greatest estates of the Hermitage appellation are: Chapoutier estate, Paul Jaboulet Aîné, Jean-Louis Chave, Delas et Frères...
