The Gigondas appellation between winds and massifs

Gigondas is a French Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) located in the Rhône region, in the commune of Gigondas. The appellation extends at the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail. There are nearly 1,217 hectares of vineyards in total. Gigondas wine producers mainly produce red wines (99%) and some rosés which represent a tiny part of the yield (1%). Regarding the grape varieties, we mainly find Grenache Noir, Syrah, and Mourvèdre as a complement. These grape varieties are blended or separated (depending on the estate's choice) and then vinified. Producers allow maceration for 2 to 4 weeks depending on the estates and vintages. Today, more than 200 winemakers perpetuate the winemaking traditions of the Gigondas appellation. Among the greatest producers are Domaine Guigal, Château de Saint-Cosme and Domaine Santa Duc. The red wines are powerful, have a well-structured body and age well. The color is garnet thanks to the Syrah.

The wines from 1943, 1945, great wines of 1947, and the 2001 vintage are considered excellent vintages in the Gigondas appellation. The exceptional vintages are the years 1961, the wines of 1985 and 1988, as well as the vintage. Finally, the wines from 1989, 1990 and the 2000 vintage are considered the best vintages of the century in Gigondas.
