The 1977 vintage remains a unique chapter in the history of French wine. Marked by extreme weather conditions, it gave birth to rare, sometimes fragile 1977 wines, but which testify to the expertise of winemakers in the face of adversity. Between spring frosts, rainy summer and late harvests, the 1977 wines have become authentic witnesses of a difficult but historic vintage. Curious enthusiasts may still find some 1977 red wines from Pauillac, Pomerol, Margaux, Saint-Estèphe, or even Saint-Émilion, as well as Sauternes 1977 from Barsac, Morey Saint Denis 1977 from Burgundy or even Châteauneuf-du-Pape 1977 and Alsace 1977 for the most successful.

The 1977 vintage was marked by particularly difficult weather conditions. Severe spring frosts in March and April destroyed part of the buds. The summer, cold and rainy, slowed down maturity, whilst the harvest took place under unstable skies. In Sauternes, noble rot developed late, limiting yields. As a result, the red wines lack concentration, but some sweet and fortified wines have fared well.
Yes, but with discernment. Most 1977 red wines from France have now passed their peak. On the other hand, sweet wines and 1977 Vintage Port can still be enjoyed with undiminished pleasure, thanks to their sugar-acidity balance and remarkable longevity. The 1977 Sauternes, although rare, retain a beautiful sweetness when they come from estates such as Château d'Yquem 1977. Lovers of old wines will find in this year bottles of emotion, witnesses of an era.

The 1977 vintage began under bad auspices. After early budbreak in March, a wave of frost devastated the buds throughout the French vineyard, particularly in Bordeaux. Further frosts in April, followed by a rainy and cold spring, hindered the growth of the vine. The summer, far from being a saviour, remained humid and cool, and only a short period of warmth in September was insufficient to save the harvest.
Result: the 1977 red wines often lack concentration and maturity, with marked acidity. The 1977 white wines are lively, taut, sometimes austere, whilst the 1977 sweet wines did not benefit from favourable conditions for noble rot. However, certain terroirs — notably in Alsace and in some Graves — managed to stand out thanks to rigorous selection and precision work.
In Bordeaux, the weather conditions severely tested the winegrowers. The frosts in March and April destroyed a large part of the buds, whilst the rains in May and June disrupted flowering. September, though drier, was insufficient to compensate for the delayed maturation.
The 1977 red wines are light, acidic, with vegetal notes and little structure. In the Médoc, only a few properties such as Château Latour 1977 or Château Léoville-Las Cases 1977 manage to offer acceptable balance. In Pomerol, the merlots, more sensitive to frost, yielded little volume, but Petrus 1977 and Trotanoy 1977 remain curiosities for enthusiasts.
In the Graves, Château Haut-Brion 1977 and La Mission Haut-Brion 1977 show a certain elegance thanks to well-drained soils. As for the Sauternes 1977, they suffered: botrytisation was late and incomplete, making the wines rare, fine but lacking their usual richness. Château d'Yquem 1977 retained only 30% of the harvest for its grand vin — a sign of drastic selection and unwavering standards.
The 1977 vintage in Burgundy was demanding: a cold spring, a humid summer, but September sunshine which enabled the production of sincere and delicate wines. The 1977 red Burgundies, particularly from Gevrey-Chambertin and Chambolle-Musigny, are distinguished by their suppleness and their aromas of ripe red fruits, although light. Conversely, the 1977 white Burgundies have aged better: Meursault 1977 and Puligny-Montrachet 1977 reveal a fine tension, notes of hazelnut and a delicate minerality.
Amongst the emblematic estates, we mention Henri de Villamont – Le Clos des Ormes 1977, a typical expression of a cool but balanced year.
Wines of emotion and memory, perfect for discovering Burgundy 1977, a rare and authentic vintage.
The Rhône Valley 1977 was no exception: the humid conditions produced weak and inexpressive wines. The Côtes-du-Rhône 1977 are supple but light, whilst the Châteauneuf-du-Pape 1977 lack body. A few houses such as Guigal produced honest wines, particularly in the northern appellations (Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage), but without the usual power.
