expert's opinions

(Ed 1998) In what was a miserable vintage, Yquem managed to produce a toasty, ripe, pineapple, buttery-scented wine with a predominate oaky character. Seventy percent of the crop was eliminated in 1977, and the result is a wine that may well turn out to be almost as good as the underrated 1973.

Château d'Yquem
Château d'Yquem

Château d'Yquem is an absolute benchmark among great sweet wines and occupies a unique place in the wine history of Bordeaux. Located in the heart of the Sauternes appellation, the estate benefits from exceptional terroir and microclimate that favour the development of botrytis cinerea. In the official 1855 classification, Château d'Yquem obtained an unparalleled status by being consecrated Premier Cru Supérieur, a unique distinction among the grands crus classés.

The identity of Château d'Yquem is based on extreme rigour at every stage of production: very low yields, successive selective harvests and rigorous selection of grapes. Long the property of the Lur Saluces family, the estate has belonged to the LVMH group since 1997, which has chosen to preserve the technical independence and historical standards of the château.

In great years, Château d'Yquem produces legendary vintages, such as Château d'Yquem 1908, Château d'Yquem 1921, Château d'Yquem 1945, Château d'Yquem 1949, Château d'Yquem 1967, Château d'Yquem 2009, demonstrating an exceptional ageing capacity that can extend over several decades, or even beyond.
