To drink between 1938 and 2055

Château note: The cool spring climate gives a flowering that is just normal in precocity; followed by a hot and dry summer, storms at the end of August/beginning of September bringing 50 mm of rain; noble rot develops and offers a first half of the harvest that is very rich. From 9 October onwards, things become more complicated with 100 mm and too few dry windows for concentration, and quality will no longer be the same.

Dark fox red. Wonderfully rich, thick and creamy and finishes so clean and beautiful. If served blind you wouldn't guess the age anywhere near 85 years. Fantastic! Great with sautéed foie gras.

. Tasted well over a dozen times in different contexts through the 1970s and 1980s, almost all 5-star though colour variation noted, from lemon gold to rich warm amber, but never as dark as the "29''.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
The 1928 Château d'Yquem was generously opened at a dinner in the Far East, this bottle purchased ex-château as indicated by the back label. Deep amber in color, the bouquet has amazing precision and intensity, a smorgasbord of scents such as mandarin, dried fig, nougat and a touch of adhesive (a common trait in old Sauternes and one that I quite enjoy). The palate is beautifully balanced with a killer line of acidity, layers of candied orange peel, mandarin, orange rind and botrytis. Whilst it does not contain the sheer power and flamboyance of the sensational 1929 d'Yquem, it does offer stunning persistence in the mouth. After 88 years, this Sauternes shows absolutely no sign of diminishing and it is bound to reach its century with style. Just fabulous.

Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar Insider
Amber in color, the strong perfume is loaded with notes of butter, burnt caramel, smoke butterscotch, apricot jam and orange rind. The wine is surprisingly concentrated, fresh, silky long, bright, acidic and sweet, but not overly so, in the finish you find burnt toast with caramel, pineapple and candied green apples.

Château d'Yquem
Château d'Yquem

Château d'Yquem is an absolute reference for great sweet wines and occupies a unique place in the winemaking history of Bordeaux. Located in the heart of the Sauternes appellation, the estate benefits from an exceptional terroir and microclimate favouring the development of botrytis cinerea. During the official classification of 1855, Château d'Yquem obtained an unrivalled status by being consecrated Premier Cru Supérieur, a unique distinction among the grands crus classés.

The identity of Château d'Yquem rests on an extreme requirement at every stage of production: very low yields, harvesting by successive selections and rigorous selection of grapes. Long owned by the Lur Saluces family, the estate has belonged since 1997 to the LVMH group, which has chosen to preserve the technical independence and historical standards of the château.

In great years, Château d'Yquem gives birth to vintages that have become emblematic, such as Château d'Yquem 1908, Château d'Yquem 1921, Château d'Yquem 1945, Château d'Yquem 1949, Château d'Yquem 1967, Château d'Yquem 2009, illustrating an exceptional ageing capacity that can extend over several decades, or even beyond.
