Château note: An exceptional climatic year, marked by intense and regular drought; the frost at budbreak slightly limited the harvest. 1st September, 38 mm of rain triggered Botrytis; early and lengthy harvests at 14 and 30° offered a beautiful diversity of terroir, a source of great complexity. Of very great richness, perhaps the greatest vintage of the century.

Not all legendary wines live up to their lofty status. But this did! Right from the start, the amber, translucent, mahogany colour in the hand-blown bottle is a thing of beauty. From there, the caramel, burnt sugar, molasses, roasted orange rind, clove, singed, overripe mango, butterscotch, and melted butter aromas created an unforgettable bouquet, which continued to add chocolate covered orange overtones as the wine remained in the glass. On the palate, the perfect balance between the interplay of sugar, honey, roasted, orange tropical fruit, butter, acidity, and melted caramel transfixes you. Tasted for more than 2 hours, the wine never degraded. Instead, it continued adding more shades of sugary, cooked honey, and buttery sweetness to the fruits that were kept fresh by the wines racy, acidities. When young, there are sweet wines that give d'Yquem a run for the money. But after the 50-year mark, there is no equal. And now, I can safely say, that gap is even wider as the wine crosses the century mark.

A colossus. Perhaps the most staggeringly rich Yquem of all time, certainly since the towering 1847. A word of advice: do not be put off by the dark colour. This is correct. The bouquet, very rich, honeyed of course, peachy, barley sugar, intense yet fragrant, crème brûlée yet again, but very true. On the palate from sweet to very sweet, depending I think on context, unquestionably rich, powerful, even assertive, great length and intensity, and supported by life-preserving acidity. One of life's sublime experiences.

Château d'Yquem is an absolute reference for great sweet wines and occupies a unique place in the winemaking history of Bordeaux. Located in the heart of the Sauternes appellation, the estate benefits from an exceptional terroir and microclimate favouring the development of botrytis cinerea. During the official classification of 1855, Château d'Yquem obtained an unrivalled status by being consecrated Premier Cru Supérieur, a unique distinction among the grands crus classés.

The identity of Château d'Yquem rests on an extreme requirement at every stage of production: very low yields, harvesting by successive selections and rigorous selection of grapes. Long owned by the Lur Saluces family, the estate has belonged since 1997 to the LVMH group, which has chosen to preserve the technical independence and historical standards of the château.

In great years, Château d'Yquem gives birth to vintages that have become emblematic, such as Château d'Yquem 1908, Château d'Yquem 1921, Château d'Yquem 1945, Château d'Yquem 1949, Château d'Yquem 1967, Château d'Yquem 2009, illustrating an exceptional ageing capacity that can extend over several decades, or even beyond.
