2012 Wine

2012 Wine

Our opinion on the 2012 vintage: a great success for Champagne. The 2012 Bordeaux vintage was small and difficult, but with moments of greatness. The rainy spring delayed flowering, while a hot and dry summer followed. Yields were slightly down and wine quality was mixed. The whites were generally very good, particularly those from Pessac-Léognan, Graves and Entre-deux-Mers. Sauternes suffered the most from the bad weather. The growing season was unpredictable, with wet conditions in spring and dry heat in summer. The famous Château d'Yquem didn't even produce wine for this vintage.

The 2012 Burgundy vintage, despite some challenges, gave birth to fantastic wines. Despite a wet spring with frosts and mildew attacks, some wines shone. The whites, fresh and expressive, offered remarkable examples of Chablis. The reds, although concentrated, showed seductive qualities. The best wines come from the Côte d'Or and the Côte Chalonnaise.

The 2012 vintage for the Rhône Valley was challenging at times, but good wines were produced. It's described as a late vintage; indeed, an exceptionally wet spring and disease threats were followed by a hot and dry summer that allowed for successful ripening. The wines show a refined character with good balancing acidity and fine tannins, offering a structure conducive to ageing.

The 2012 vintage for Champagne was excellent despite challenges during the growing season. The wet spring with frost and hailstorms affected yields, but an incredible August turned things around. The grapes were able to ripen fully, producing wines of great depth, complexity and aromatic flavours with balanced acidity. This vintage is widely regarded as one of the best in Champagne for decades, and wines from the top estates are likely to drink superbly now.

Our advice for buying a 2012 wine

In Bordeaux, we recommend the appellations of Pauillac, Saint-Julien, Saint-Estèphe and Margaux, which were all excellent. The best examples show a balanced and refined structure with clear and concentrated fruit.

In Burgundy, the red wines of 2012 are better on the Côte de Nuits side. Domaine Dugat-Py particularly stood out with the Dugat-Py Vieilles Vignes 2012 in Chambertin Grand Cru.

In the Rhône Valley, the best reds come from the high-altitude vineyards of the Northern Rhône, while Châteauneuf-du-Pape in the Southern Rhône produced good fruity and refreshing wines.

In Champagne, the red grape varieties, such as Pinot Noir and Meunier, were able to ripen fully, and the Chardonnay was both rich and round while retaining the necessary acidity.
