Morey Saint Denis Appellation
The Morey-Saint-Denis appellation is a French AOC that produces Burgundy wines. Facing east on hillsides reaching an altitude of about 2,501 metres, the so-called "village appellation" includes a vineyard of 97 hectares, of which 42 hectares are devoted to the production of Burgundy premiers crus.
Despite its size, the Morey-Saint-Denis vineyard produces 20 Burgundy premiers crus. It is also one of the communes best endowed with Burgundy grands crus, including: Bonnes-Mares, Clos de la Roche, Clos de Tart, Clos des Lambrays and Clos Saint Denis, which are located in the commune.
Morey-Saint-Denis primarily produces red wines from Pinot Noir, but also white wines from Chardonnay. The red wines have a medium ageing potential, requiring 3 to 15 years before opening a bottle. The white wines, however, have a short ageing potential. They are estimated to need only 2 to 4 years of cellaring.
Among the best vintages of the Morey-Saint-Denis appellation, the years 1935, the grand crus of 1943 as well as the 1952 or 1971 vintages offer excellent wines. 1961, 1976, and the 2005 vintage are exceptional vintages. Finally, the wines from 1928, 1929, 1969 vintage and 1978 are the best vintages of this appellation.
