History and identity of Château Cos d'Estournel

Located on the hill of Cos, in the heart of the Saint-Estèphe appellation, Château Cos d'Estournel came into being at the beginning of the 19th century under the impetus of Louis-Gaspard d'Estournel. Inheriting already planted vines, he very early on perceived the exceptional potential of the site and set about producing a wine with a strong identity. A visionary and bold trader, he rapidly developed exports of Cos d'Estournel to distant markets, notably Asian ones, which earned him the nickname 'Maharajah of Saint-Estèphe'.

To celebrate this success, he had a château built in an extreme oriental style, unique in the Bordeaux region. Weakened by debts linked to this ambition, the estate was sold in 1852, before being consecrated as a Second Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 classification. After belonging to several owners and major families of the Bordeaux wine trade, including the Ginestet family, Cos d'Estournel entered a new era in 2000 with its acquisition by Michel Reybier, who undertook a profound transformation of the estate.

Terroir and viticultural environment

The vineyard of Château Cos d'Estournel rests on an exceptional terroir, composed of deep gravel, pebbles and clay subsoils, benefiting from the proximity of the Gironde estuary. This situation ensures natural thermal regulation and promotes homogeneous ripening of the grapes, even in the most demanding vintages.

The diversity of parcels allows for a nuanced expression of the terroir and contributes to the depth and complexity of the wines. This geological foundation largely explains the estate's consistent quality over the decades.

Production philosophy and wine style

Since the 2000s, Château Cos d'Estournel has been equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, notably a contemporary cellar designed by Jean-Michel Wilmotte, enabling parcel-by-parcel work of great precision. The grape varieties, dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon and complemented by Merlot, are cultivated with constant exacting standards in the vineyard and cellar.

The selection of parcels is particularly rigorous. The grapes destined for the grand vin of Château Cos d'Estournel are chosen for their concentration and ageing potential, whilst those expressing a more immediate register are used in the production of Les Pagodes de Cos, the estate's second wine. This hierarchisation allows the excellence of the grand vin to be preserved whilst offering a more accessible interpretation of the Saint-Estèphe terroir. The style of the wines is characterised by a creamy texture, an ample structure and silky tannins, always carried by great aromatic precision.

Ageing potential and critical recognition

The wines of Cos d'Estournel are amongst the great ageing references of the Médoc. In major vintages, they evolve harmoniously over several decades, gaining in complexity and finesse. Recent vintages, such as Cos d'Estournel 2021 and Cos d'Estournel 2022, perfectly illustrate this ability to combine power, balance and freshness, confirming the qualitative momentum of the estate.

Perspective within the Saint-Estèphe appellation

Within the Saint-Estèphe appellation, Château Cos d'Estournel occupies a distinctive position through its history, style and international reputation. It stands alongside other major estates such as Château Montrose, recognised for its rigour and longevity, Château Calon Ségur, emblem of Médoc classicism, and Château Phélan Ségur, appreciated for its balance and elegance. Through its strong identity and the consistency of its wines, Cos d'Estournel contributes fully to the renown of Saint-Estèphe as a terroir for great structured and enduring wines.
