This Cos – I have tasted it several times over the last 20 years – was for a long time the most closed, most angular of all. It has not shed that character to this day. The tannins of the sample submitted by the estate are comparable in intensity to those of Latour, even if they are slightly less broad, yet somewhat more racy and elongated. The nose is that of a Saint-Estèphe of that era, slightly animal at first, then balsamic, with notes of tobacco and blackcurrant. I would happily let the wine age for another ten years. Even if it is far removed from today's precision, and it compensates with power and character for what it lacks in elegance: a great wine.

Very deep colour, with amber rim. An older wine. Quite a distinctive, cheesy, ripe nose. Very serious wine this. A streak of peppery, cabernet fruit on the palate, with rich, chewy texture and lovely balance. Loads of tannin in the finish, but fine length and purity. This is in need of more time as it's pretty tough still, but is quite something.

Like many Bordeaux wines from 1986, this is a tough, hard style of wine that some people love, while others will find it difficult to enjoy. And of course there are also tasters who recognise this is not their style of wine, but it has a wealth of fruit. Count me in as a charter member of group number 3. Does it have enough fruit to outlast the tannins before maturity? It will take at least 10–20 years more time to find out. The wine offers massive concentration from ripe fruit. But the wine lacks elegance and charm. It's a beast. For me, while I get the depth of flavour, at the end of the day, it was not a lot of fun to drink.

Château Cos D'Estournel

Château Cos d'Estournel is one of the most emblematic estates of the Saint-Estèphe appellation, on the left bank of Bordeaux. Classified as Second Grand Cru Classé in 1855, it owes its unique identity to its location on the hill of Cos and to the bold vision of its founder, Louis-Gaspard d'Estournel, a prominent figure of the 19th century nicknamed the "Maharajah of Saint-Estèphe".

From its beginnings, Cos d'Estournel established itself through a rare international ambition for the time, exporting its wines as far as Asia. This openness to the world is still reflected today in the château's unique architecture, inspired by the Far East, a true visual signature in the Médoc. The vineyard is based on a terroir of deep gravel mixed with clay, benefiting from the proximity of the Gironde estuary, giving the wines structure, depth and complexity.
