History and identity of Château d'Yquem

Château d'Yquem occupies a singular place in the history of the great wines of Bordeaux. The estate's origins date back to the 16th century, but it was in the 18th century that its identity became more defined, under the impetus of the Sauvage d'Yquem family, who laid the foundations for demanding viticulture and a distinctive style. From that time, the château's wines were recognised for their aromatic richness and ageing ability.

The official classification of 1855 definitively consecrates the estate's singularity by awarding it the unique status of Premier Cru Supérieur, a distinction never granted to any other wine from Sauternes. This classification confirms the founding role of Château d'Yquem in the history and hierarchy of Bordeaux sweet wines.

Long the property of the Lur Saluces family, which profoundly shaped the estate's identity and qualitative standards, Château d'Yquem entered the LVMH group in 1997. This transition follows a logic of continuity, with the new owner having chosen to preserve the château's technical autonomy and its historic level of excellence.

Terroir and viticultural environment

The vineyard of Château d'Yquem is located in the commune of Sauternes, on gravelly hillsides resting on clay-limestone subsoils. This geological diversity promotes effective natural drainage and contributes to the aromatic complexity of the wines. The local microclimate, born from the meeting between the cool mists of the Ciron and the warmth of the Garonne, creates ideal conditions for the gradual development of botrytis cinerea.

This natural phenomenon concentrates sugars and aromas whilst preserving a structuring acidity, a key element of the balance and longevity of Château d'Yquem's wines.

Production philosophy and style of the wines

The grape variety composition is predominantly based on Sémillon, complemented by Sauvignon Blanc. The work in the vineyard favours extremely low yields and constant observation of each parcel. Harvesting is carried out in successive selections, sometimes over several weeks, in order to pick only perfectly botrytised grapes.

Vinifications are carried out with great precision, followed by ageing in new barrels that accompanies the wine's richness without masking its finesse. The style of Château d'Yquem is characterised by a silky texture, profound aromatic intensity and remarkable freshness, offering a rare balance between power and elegance.

Ageing potential and critical recognition

In a constant pursuit of excellence, Château d'Yquem does not release its wine when the quality is not deemed sufficient, a unique policy that reinforces the stylistic consistency of the estate. Conversely, the great years have given birth to vintages that have become historic, such as 1921, 1937, 1945, 1947, 1959, 1975, 1976, 1983, 1988, 1997, 2001 or 2009.

The wines of Château d'Yquem possess an exceptional ageing capacity. In the finest vintages, they only fully reveal their complexity after one or two decades of cellar maturation. When kept in good conditions, they can develop favourably for a century or more, developing exceptional aromatic depth whilst retaining freshness and structure.

Perspective within the appellation

Within the Sauternes appellation, Château d'Yquem occupies a position without equivalent. Other prestigious estates such as Château Suduiraut, Château Climens or Château Coutet contribute to the appellation's influence and to the diversity of its expressions. In this context, Château d'Yquem is distinguished by absolute qualitative consistency and by a style that constitutes an essential reference point for understanding the excellence and identity of the great sweet wines of Bordeaux.
