Château Suduiraut

Château Suduiraut

Château Suduirau is a Premier Cru Classé of Sauternes. The wines of Château Suduiraut are among the greatest Sauternes. Their longevity is exceptional. As they age, the aromas of candied fruits slowly take precedence over the citrus notes found in the early years. The estate recommends decanting old vintages to enhance their bouquet. In sweet wines, the Château also produces a second wine: 'Castelnau de Suduiraut' and a third wine 'Lions de Suduiraut'. Château Suduiraut also produces some dry white wines, notably two great dry wines, Château Suduiraut Vieilles Vignes and Château Suduiraut Pur Sémillon. Finally, two other secondary cuvées are featured, such as 'Lions de Suduiraut Blanc Sec' and 'S de Suduiraut Vieilles Vignes'.

The history of Château Suduiraut

Château Suduiraut is a wine estate located in Preignac, in the Sauternes appellation, in Gironde. It is one of the Classified Great Growths of Sauternes, and is considered one of the best producers of sweet wines in the world.

The estate was founded in 1580, through the marriage of Nicole d'Allard and Léonard de Suduiraut. The château was looted and burned during the Fronde in the 17th century, but was later rebuilt. In 1776, the château was bought by Jean Joseph Duroy, Baron de Noaillan, who renamed it "Cru du Roy". The estate was enhanced with magnificent French gardens, designed by Le Nôtre, the famous gardener of King Louis XIV.

In 1855, Château Suduiraut was classified as a First Growth in the Bordeaux wine classification. It was purchased in 1992 by AXA Millésimes, which continues to produce exceptional wines, faithful to the estate's tradition.

What are the characteristics of the wines of Château Suduiraut?

The vineyard extends over more than 200 hectares, including 92 hectares of vines in the commune of Preignac

Château Suduiraut is located on exceptional terroir, composed of sandy-clay gravel. This soil, rich in minerals, is conducive to vine cultivation and allows the grapes to reach optimal maturity. The vines are planted on very well-draining and poor soil, which leads to low yields. This constraint forces the vine to draw its nutrients deeply, which strengthens its relationship with the terroir and gives it a strong minerality.

The estate is certified High Environmental Value (HVE), which guarantees environmentally friendly farming practices. The vines are planted at high density (7,000 vines/ha), which promotes grape concentration and allows for the production of more aromatic wines. The vines are also maintained according to the principles of integrated farming, with short pruning and soil cultivation.

The estate's grape varieties consist of 90% Sémillon and 10% Sauvignon Blanc. Sémillon is a traditional grape variety of the region, which produces rich and aromatic sweet wines. Sauvignon Blanc adds a touch of acidity and freshness to the wine.

The ageing process takes place in oak barrels for 18 to 24 months.

In years when the harvest does not reach the expected quality, no Grand Vin is bottled.

The best vintages of Château Suduiraut

The best vintages of Château Suduiraut are 1929, 1955, 1959 as well as the 1988 vintage. Then, Château Suduiraut 1989 and Suduiraut 1990 are particularly exceptional. Finally, Château Suduiraut 2009 received a score of 98/100 from Robert Parker.
