A contrasting 1987 vintage for the Bordeaux Grand Crus Classés. Two long weeks of rain on the vineyards before harvest meant the Cabernet was drowned. However, the Merlot was harvested just before the torrential rains, resulting in fruity and full-bodied wines in the Saint Emilion and Pomerol appellations. The wines from Pessac Léognan also produced rather successful wines. The best wines from this vintage are: Château Ausone 1987, Château Clinet 1987, Château Calon Ségur 1987, Château Haut Brion 1987 and La Mission Haut Brion 1987. The Sauternes are fruity but with limited aging potential. For Burgundy wines, the 1987 red wines are of good quality. Full-bodied, elegant wines with soft tannins. Among them, excellent wines such as Domaine Joseph Roty in Gevrey Chambertin or Domaine Dujac in Morey-Saint-Denis. In the Rhône Valley, Côte Rôtie produced the best wines of 1987.
