The F.A.Q

History and identity of Domaine de la Romanée Conti

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, often referred to by the acronym DRC, is located in Vosne-Romanée, in the heart of the Côte de Nuits in Burgundy. The history of the domaine begins in 1131, when Hugues II, Duke of Burgundy, ceded the land of the future vineyard to the Priory of Saint-Vivant. For several centuries, the monks patiently shaped this terroir before identifying, at the beginning of the 16th century, a parcel of exceptional quality, then known as "Cloux des cinq journaux".

Through successive inheritances, this parcel became "La Romanée", then took the name Romanée-Conti after its acquisition in 1760 by Louis-François de Bourbon, Prince de Conti. After the French Revolution, the vineyard was sold at auction before being definitively structured at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1912, Edmond Gaudin de Villaine and Jacques Chambon acquired Romanée-Conti, registered the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti trademark and laid the foundations for a quality charter that remains in force today. The acquisition of La Tâche in 1933, followed by the creation of the civil company in 1942 with the entry of the Leroy family, completed the constitution of the domaine as it is known today.

The co-management by the de Villaine and Leroy families has a lasting influence on the identity of the domaine. Major figures such as Lalou Bize-Leroy, co-director from 1974 to 1991, have helped to raise the domaine's level of excellence to a rarely equalled degree. Today, continuity is ensured whilst scrupulously respecting this heritage.

Terroir and viticultural environment

The vineyard of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti extends over nearly 31 hectares, exclusively classified as Grands Crus de Bourgogne. It is located mainly in the commune of Vosne-Romanée, with additional holdings in Corton and Puligny-Montrachet. The soils are composed of brown limestone, fine clays and stony scree, resting on an ancient limestone base, giving the wines mineral depth and great precision.

The domaine works nine grands crus: Échézeaux, Grands Échézeaux, Richebourg, Romanée-Saint-Vivant, Romanée-Conti (monopole), La Tâche (monopole), Corton, Corton-Charlemagne and Montrachet. This exceptional concentration of prestigious climats over a small area constitutes one of the major distinctive features of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti.

Production philosophy and style of the wines of Domaine de la Romanée Conti

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti cultivates exclusively noble Burgundian grape varieties: Pinot Noir for red wines and Chardonnay for white wines. The vineyard has been managed according to organic farming principles since the 1980s and biodynamic methods for several decades, with Biodyvin certification obtained in 2017.

Yields are deliberately kept very low, harvesting is done by hand and sorting is extremely rigorous. Vinification favours minimal intervention to preserve the expression of the terroir, whilst long ageing allows the wines to gain depth and complexity without losing their natural finesse. The style of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is distinguished by a silky texture, profound aromatic intensity and a remarkable ability to translate the singularity of each climat.

Ageing potential and critical recognition

The wines of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti possess exceptional ageing potential, capable of developing over several decades. Their longevity is based on a rare balance between concentration, freshness and structure. This capacity for evolution, combined with absolute qualitative consistency, has earned the domaine unanimous recognition from critics and tasters around the world.

Other great domaines of the Burgundy region

Within Burgundy, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti occupies a unique position. Other benchmark domaines such as Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, Domaine Georges Roumier or Domaine Leflaive also contribute to the prestige of Burgundy's great terroirs. However, the exceptional concentration of grands crus, the presence of two major monopoles and absolute stylistic consistency make Domaine de la Romanée-Conti a fundamental reference point for understanding the excellence and hierarchy of the great wines of Burgundy.
