Jancis Robinson August - 2009

This was not as thrilling as I'd hoped. Very deep ruby. Dom de la Romanée-Conti colour with much shading and a yellow rim. Actually less obviously violets on the nose than the Clos de la Roche from Remy! But it opened up in the glass – some luscious mushroom cream sauce aromas – and was really energetic although the acidity is coming to the fore, alas.

Bricked through to the centre. This was quite an interesting wine, particularly for the vintage and while clearly tiring, there were still hints of the classic La Tâche spice and class on the now completely secondary and tertiary nose. The flavours are rich and sweet though now beginning to thin somewhat though the finish picks up as it coats the mouth with velvety extract. All in all, a more than respectable showing though I confess to being surprised that this wine does not outshine the Romanée Conti, given the young vines in the RC.

Pale and light in colour. Complex notes of underbrush, truffle and sweet fruit mark the bouquet. It's a hedonistic wine initially, giving more in aromas and the initial impression on the palate. Fleeting flavours, a delicate balance and shy on the finish.--La Tâche non-blind vertical.

Domaine Romanée Conti
Domaine Romanée Conti

The Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is one of the most emblematic wine estates in Burgundy and an absolute reference amongst the great wines of the world. Its history is intimately linked to the greatest climats of Vosne-Romanée, of which it is the exclusive or quasi-exclusive custodian. The estate notably cultivates exceptional grands crus, including Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Romanée-Saint-Vivant, Grands Échézeaux, Échézeaux, as well as the celebrated Montrachet for white wines.

The Romanée-Conti, a climat classified as Grand Cru, forms the historical and symbolic heart of the estate. Owned by the domaine since the 18th century, this monopole vineyard embodies an exacting vision of wine, founded on precision, faithfulness to the terroir and extremely rigorous viticulture. The Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is renowned for its constant pursuit of balance and purity of expression, favouring very low yields and meticulous vineyard work.

Emblematic vintages such as Domaine de la Romanée-Conti 1942, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti 1964, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti 1985, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti 1986, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti 1990, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti 2000, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti 2005, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti 2006, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti 2011, illustrate the estate's ability to produce wines of remarkable depth, capable of spanning decades whilst maintaining an exceptional legibility of their origin. The Domaine de la Romanée-Conti thus remains an essential reference for understanding the excellence and singularity of the great wines of Burgundy.
