Our opinion on the 1923 vintage: a great year for Burgundy wines. The 1923 vintage was a complicated year, but excellent for Burgundy wines. In Bordeaux, spring was cold and wet, followed by a hot summer. The 1923 wines are decent thanks to a certain initial charm. However, the Sauternes are of slightly superior quality, rich and indulgent but some wines have dried out.

In Burgundy, the wines from the 1923 vintage are very successful. According to Jacques Puisais, "it's the second greatest year of the century". Having benefited from beautiful sunny weather during summer, the red wines are supple and mellow. The white Burgundies have surpassed themselves, they are of very high quality but it's becoming rare to be able to taste them.

Several successes also for the 1923 Champagnes, despite a meagre harvest. Tasting can be risky but the wines still offer a delicious and pleasant taste experience.

This year, Rhône wines are to be avoided. Producers suffer a second year of deep misfortune. However, the 1923 vintage is slightly better than that of 1922.

     

Our advice for buying a 1923 wine

The 1923 vintage is undoubtedly better in Burgundy, with surprising Premier Crus and Grand Crus. This vintage gains in tannic structure and liveliness, which carries it for a long time. We recommend the appellations Beaune, Musigny, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Romanée, Santenay and Savigny-lès-Beaune.
