History and identity of Bouchard Père & Fils

Bouchard Père & Fils is one of the oldest houses in Burgundy. Founded in 1731 in Beaune by Michel Bouchard, the house has developed over the centuries through the methodical acquisition of parcels located in the finest climats of the Côte de Beaune and the Côte de Nuits. From the 19th century onwards, it built up an exceptional land heritage which enabled it to control the entire production chain, from vineyard to commercialisation.

Over the generations, Bouchard Père & Fils has established itself as an essential reference for great Burgundy wines, combining négociant activity with the operation of a vast estate. Now owned by the Artémis group (Pinault family), the house has consolidated its position amongst the major signatures of the region, with a firmly asserted heritage and quality vision.

Terroir and location in Burgundy

The estate extends over more than 130 hectares, with a remarkable proportion in Premiers Crus and Grands Crus. Bouchard Père & Fils is present in emblematic appellations such as Beaune, Volnay, Pommard, Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, Corton, Corton-Charlemagne, Chevalier-Montrachet, Montrachet, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze and Vosne-Romanée.

This strategic location allows the house to express the full diversity of Burgundy's terroirs: limestone and clay-limestone soils of the Côte de Beaune, marls and brown limestone of the Côte de Nuits, varied expositions favouring distinct profiles in both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Certain parcels, such as Beaune Grèves Vigne de l'Enfant Jésus, constitute true historical references within their appellation.

Production philosophy and wine style of Bouchard Père & Fils

The consideration initiated in 2009 regarding conversion to organic agriculture led to a progressive transformation of cultivation practices. From the 2025 vintage onwards, all parcels of the Bouchard Père & Fils estate are certified organic, reflecting a lasting commitment from the family, technical teams and management.

The management of the vineyard is based on careful observation of soils and natural balances, with a constant pursuit of precision. The vinifications aim to respect the identity of each climat, without over-extraction or artifice, and the élevages are adjusted to preserve the purity of the fruit and the tension of the terroirs. The Bouchard Père & Fils style is characterised by elegance, aromatic clarity and a structure suited to long ageing.

Ageing potential and recognition

The wines of Bouchard Père & Fils regularly feature amongst the references of the great international tastings.

Thanks to the quality of the terroirs and the rigour of the élevage, the cuvées from the Premiers Crus and Grands Crus present significant ageing potential, evolving towards complex registers of ripe fruits, spices, undergrowth and mineral notes.

Perspective within the Burgundy landscape

Within Burgundy, Bouchard Père & Fils occupies a singular position, at the crossroads of a great historic house and a substantial owner-operated estate. Through the extent and quality of its heritage, the house ranks amongst the major references of the appellations of the Côte de Beaune and the Côte de Nuits. In Beaune, its historic parcels interact with those of houses such as Louis Jadot. In Volnay and Pommard, it operates within a quality landscape marked by signatures such as Domaine Marquis d'Angerville or Domaine de Courcel.

On the great white terroirs of Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet or Chevalier-Montrachet, Bouchard Père & Fils stands alongside essential players such as Domaine Leflaive or Domaine des Comtes Lafon. In the Côte de Nuits, its locations in Chambertin-Clos de Bèze or Vosne-Romanée place it in an environment of excellence shared with leading estates such as Domaine Armand Rousseau or Domaine de la Romanée-Conti.

This capacity to be present on exceptional climats, whilst maintaining stylistic coherence and constant exacting standards, confers upon Bouchard Père & Fils a strategic position amongst the great Burgundian signatures, sought after by discerning enthusiasts and collectors of great Burgundy wines.
