The F.A.Q

Can you still drink a wine from 1997?

Yes, the 1997 wines are now at full maturity and can still provide much pleasure, depending on type and region. The 1997 red Bordeaux, especially those from the most prestigious appellations, are smooth and balanced. The 1997 white Burgundies show fine evolution with notes of honey and dried fruits.

The 1997 Sauternes are at their peak and can still age for several decades. This vintage is therefore perfectly suited to lovers of evolved and harmonious wines.

Why is the 1997 vintage considered a success in Sauternes?

Thanks to an ideal climate for botrytisation, the Sauternais 1997 experienced perfect conditions: alternating morning mists and sunny afternoons. This allowed for natural concentration of sugars and exceptional aromatic complexity.

Estates such as Château d'Yquem 1997, Suduiraut 1997, Rayne-Vigneau 1997 and La Tour Blanche 1997 have produced wines of rarely equalled richness and elegance. The 1997 vintage thus remains an absolute reference for lovers of sweet wines.

Which 1997 wines have the best ageing potential?

The 1997 Sauternes remain the most promising in terms of longevity, capable of ageing for another twenty years or more. Some Bordeaux Grands Crus, such as Petrus 1997, Cheval Blanc 1997, Haut-Brion 1997, Angelus 1997, Pavie Macquin 1997 continue to evolve with elegance.

The 1997 white Burgundies retain fine vitality when from renowned estates, whilst the 1997 Alsace wines still offer a remarkable balance between richness and freshness.

The 1997 vintage in France: a year of precocity and contrast

The year 1997 began under ideal climatic conditions: a mild winter and a warm spring led to one of the earliest flowerings of the century. The summer, alternating between heat and rainy episodes, resulted in heterogeneous ripening, but the most rigorous estates were able to take advantage of a fine late season to produce balanced and expressive wines.

The 1997 vintage is recognised for its supple, generous and harmonious wines, with beautiful aromatic maturity. Whilst it does not rival the structure of the 1996 or 2000 vintages, it offers immediate accessibility and certain tasting pleasure, particularly in the red wines 1997 from Bordeaux, Sauternes, Burgundy and the Loire.

Bordeaux 1997 – Elegance and the triumph of sweet wines

In Bordeaux, the 1997 vintage produced accessible, supple and round wines, marked by early maturity and vibrant fruit. The Merlots from the Right Bank, particularly in Pomerol 1997 and Saint-Émilion 1997, yielded fleshy and velvety wines. Among the successes: Petrus 1997, Le Pin 1997, L'Évangile 1997, La Fleur-Pétrus 1997 and Cheval Blanc 1997.

The Graves 1997 display beautiful harmony, led by exceptional growths such as Château Haut-Brion 1997, La Mission Haut-Brion 1997, and Domaine de Chevalier 1997.

But it is in Sauternes that the year 1997 reached a legendary level. Perfect botrytisation and meticulous selection produced wines of exceptional richness, comparable to the great 1989 and 1990 vintages. The cuvées of Château d'Yquem 1997, Suduiraut 1997, Lafaurie-Peyraguey 1997, Rieussec 1997, Rayne-Vigneau 1997 are among the finest sweet wines of the 20th century.

Burgundy 1997 – Exceptional whites and seductive reds

The 1997 vintage in Burgundy is distinguished by favourable conditions and a healthy harvest. The white wines 1997 display remarkable purity and precision, with aromas of citrus, white flowers and hazelnut. The terroirs of Meursault 1997, Puligny-Montrachet 1997 and Chassagne-Montrachet 1997 deliver splendid cuvées signed by Coche-Dury, Domaine Leflaive, Bonneau du Martray.

The red wines 1997 from Côte de Nuits are fine and expressive, particularly in Vosne-Romanée, Gevrey-Chambertin, Chambolle-Musigny, La Tâche with estates such as Domaine Dujac 1997, Joseph Drouhin 1997, Domaine de la Romanée Conti 1997 and Henri de Villamont 1997.

Rhône Valley 1997 – The Generosity of the Sun

The Rhône 1997 is a sunny and seductive vintage, particularly successful in the north. The Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie and Cornas combine structure and finesse, signed by Guigal 1997, Chapoutier 1997, Jaboulet Aine 1997 and Jean-Louis Chave 1997.

In the south, the Châteauneuf-du-Pape 1997 offer rich and aromatic wines, led by Beaucastel 1997, Clos des Papes 1997 and Rayas 1997.

Loire 1997 – Refined sweet wines and luminous whites

Thanks to an exceptional late season, the Loire Valley 1997 produced a superb vintage for whites and sweet wines. The Coteaux-du-Layon, Saumur Champigny and Vouvray deliver wines of rare elegance. Among the successes: Domaine Huet 1997 and Clos Rougeard. These wines stand out for their freshness, balance and ageing potential.
