Château Poujeaux
Château Poujeaux is a Bordeaux wine estate. Perched on the superb gravel ridges of Grand Poujeaux, the Château Poujeaux vineyard extends in one piece to the northeast of Moulis. Cabernet Sauvignon (50%) and Merlot (40%), the king grape varieties of the Médoc, grow alongside Petit Verdot (5%) and Cabernet Franc (5%).

The history of Château Poujeaux
Château Poujeaux is a wine estate located in Moulis-en-Médoc, in the Gironde region. Its history dates back to the 16th century, when the lands belonged to Château Latour. In the 19th century, the Poujeaux lands became independent and were acquired by the Castaing family.
In 1880, the estate was divided into three parts following an inheritance. One of these parts was bought by François Theil in 1921. In 1957, his son reunited the three parts to reconstitute the original estate. Château Poujeaux was then managed by Jean Theil, and later by his three children from 1997 to 2007.
In 2008, Château Poujeaux was acquired by Philippe Cuvelier. Today, the estate is co-managed by Matthieu Cuvelier and Christophe Labenne. The current owners have breathed new energy and great ambition into the estate, while perpetuating the family spirit.
What are the characteristics of Château Poujeaux wines?
The estate is located on the crest of Grand Poujeaux, a gravelly and well-drained terroir. The vineyard, in one piece, extends over 68 hectares and is planted with 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot.
The vines have an average age of 30 years and their density is 10,000 vines per hectare.
The harvest is carried out manually in small crates, fermentation takes place with whole berries before aging for 12 months in 30% new barrels.
The wines of Château Poujeaux are dense, rich, deep and elegant. They are characterized by fruity aromas (blackcurrant, blackberry, cherry), melted tannins and a beautiful length on the palate.
What is the second wine of Château Poujeaux?
Château Poujeaux also produces a second wine called "La Salle de Poujeaux", it comes from younger vines with the same expertise as for the grand vin, and is aged in barrels previously used for the grand vin.
The best vintages of Château Poujeaux
The best wines from Château Poujeaux are the vintages 1949, 1986, 1989, 2000 and 2009.
Food and wine pairings
The wines of Château Poujeaux pair perfectly with red meats, game and cheeses.
