History of the estate
The Paul Jaboulet Aîné estate was founded in 1834 in Tain-l'Hermitage in the Rhône Valley by Antoine Jaboulet. The property remained in the family until 1997, then was sold in 2006 to the Frey family, who also own Château La Lagune and other estates in Champagne and Bordeaux. Since then, Caroline Frey, oenologist and winemaker, has been leading the house with the aim of combining historical heritage and qualitative renewal.
Climate, terroir and wine style
The vineyard extends over approximately 125 hectares, including 25 hectares on the Hermitage hill. The soils are often composed of white rolled pebbles, decomposed granite or mica schist depending on the appellations. The south-facing exposure, steep slopes and warm microclimate allow good ripening of the grapes, especially Syrah for the reds, and Marsanne, Roussanne and Viognier for the whites.
The style is characterised by fine tannins, great aromatic depth, and a balance between power and elegance. Ageing (new barrels in varying proportions, long maturation) plays an essential role in refining the wines without masking their terroir expression.
Ageing potential of wines from Domaine Paul Jaboulet Ainé
The estate's top wines have very high ageing potential. For example, Hermitage La Chapelle often requires 10 to 20 years (or even more depending on the vintage) to reach its full expression. After years, it reveals complex aromas of leather, undergrowth, liquorice, ripe jammy fruits and mushroom. Cuvées such as Côte-Rôtie “Domaine des Pierrelles” or Saint-Joseph also show that they can improve over a dozen years or more.
The estate's finest cuvées
Hermitage La Chapelle: emblematic cuvée, produced between ~30,000 and 80,000 bottles depending on the year; blend of Syrah from the finest Hermitage terroirs such as Le Méal, Les Greffieux, Les Roucoules, Les Dionnières. Great depth, fine tannins, very high ageing potential. The La Chapelle 1990 cuvée received the perfect score of 100/100 from Robert Parker.
La Petite Chapelle (sometimes called Maison Bleue): made from the less concentrated lots destined for La Chapelle, more moderate yield, more accessible style when young, to be drunk earlier.
