The 1990 Hermitage La Chapelle lived up to its reputation on this occasion, and of the three titans (1990, 1978 and 1961), it was probably my favourite. Still inky coloured and ruby at the rim, it offers an absolutely profound bouquet of sweet cassis, smoked meats, chocolate, liquorice and spice. This is followed by a full-bodied, insanely textured, pure and hedonistic palate that has that perfect mix of still-vibrant fruit and ample secondary nuances. I suspect the '61 was even richer at this stage, but the overall purity and freshness here are incredible. It will continue to evolve for decades, but I'd happily open bottles today.

The wine is full-bodied, structured and vibrant, finishing with a wealth of red and black fruits, green olives, and herbs with real staying power. This is no longer young, but it is not fully mature, for that, you need to wait maybe 5-10 years. This could be a 75 year wine if well-stored.

Dense, youthful crimson colour. Dark, brooding aromas. Caramel, spices, plummy black fruit and a super-ripe, mint-humbug intensity. Palate is very, very tannic, swamping rich, jammy blackcurrant fruit. This is full and luscious, but the wine is braced by fierce tannins and searing acidity. A very serious wine and with huge potential.

Dark colour, leather tar, ripe cherry fruit, herbs, Christmas spices, celery. On the palate taut, still stands like a rock in the glass, noticeably livelier than a 90 from the half bottle tasted a few years ago, the tannin has largely melted away, a good acidity supports the still present fruit, grainy and with lots of pressure on the mid-palate the wine extends long on the finish, ending with dark fruit and some truffle. A noticeably matured wine, which however still has some reserves.

Very dark blackish ruby. Masses of fine sediment. Meaty and pungent on the nose. Proper Hermitage! Sweet palate entry and lots of evolution into a sweet leathery tarmacadam whole with real grip still. No hurry to drink.

For almost two centuries, Paul Jaboulet Aîné has been offering consumers the product of ancestral expertise with excellence at the heart of its strategy. To perpetuate these values, the company strengthens this heritage both in the vineyard through new acquisitions and in the quality of wines while respecting the environment. The diversity of the "lieu-dit" terroirs gives the wine a particular identity through the blending of different plots. Its La Chapelle cuvée, based on the hills of Hermitage, reigns over the Rhône Valley. In the 13th century, returning from the crusades, it welcomed the Chevalier de Stérimberg. Later it would become the family's flagship wine, Hermitage La Chapelle, offering tasters great sensations. The 1961 vintage was ranked among the Twelve legendary bottles of the 20th century, with some bottles and magnums still sleeping at Jaboulet and in cellars around the world. The name Hermitage "La Chapelle" is linked to the small Saint-Christophe chapel overlooking the terraced vineyard dominating the Rhône. These Syrahs are planted on rich and varied soils with a great diversity of terroirs (les Bessards, les Greffieux, le Méal and les Rocoules). It is from the richness of these different terroirs that the complexity of Hermitage La Chapelle is born.
