For Bordeaux wines, a rather satisfactory year. Marked by changeable weather with a hot summer and heavy rains before the harvest, severe sorting was necessary. Talented producers manage to stand out with fleshy and balanced wines. The best successes are found in the Médoc, particularly in the Margaux, Saint-Julien, and Pessac-Léognan appellations. The same observation applies to Burgundy wines, with capricious weather but ultimately a very decent yield and grape quality. The red Burgundies improve with time, but the whites are not built for ageing.

In the Rhône, following a rather dark period between 1991 and 1994, good summer conditions were swept away by heavy rains. In the South, severe flooding occurred from mid-September. This resulted in rather light wines.

 

Our advice for buying a 1993 wine

Among the finest successes of this vintage, we recommend Château Angelus 1993, Château Margaux 1993, Château Pape Clément 1993 and Château Talbot 1993, which offer great wines. The Sauternes this year are best avoided, as heavy rains deteriorated the quality of the vintage.

Regarding Burgundy wines, turn to the red wines which are good, complex and gain in length over time.

In the northern Rhône Valley, the 1993 wines are of lower quality. However, in the southern Rhône, the red wines are excellent. The Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas appellations produced a great vintage.
