The 1928 vintage ranks among the great years of the interwar period and remains today a reference for lovers of old wines. In several French wine-growing regions, climatic conditions favoured a slow and complete ripening of the grapes, giving rise to structured wines remarkably suited to ageing. This 1928 wine thus takes its place in the history of great vintages capable of enduring the decades. Today, bottles can still be found from prestigious appellations such as Pauillac, Saint-Julien, Margaux, Pomerol, Saint-Émilion, but also Gevrey-Chambertin, Vosne-Romanée, Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Sauternes, which illustrate the diversity and longevity of the great wines of this 1928 vintage.

The 1928 vintage holds a special place in the history of great European wines. Considered one of the major vintages of the interwar period, it distinguished itself through a remarkable ripeness of the grapes and an exceptional structure of the wines produced. In several French wine-growing regions, the year was marked by a generally favourable vegetative cycle, with conditions allowing a slow and progressive maturation of the berries.
After a relatively cold winter and a fairly stable spring, the summer of 1928 settled into generally dry and sunny conditions. This weather allowed for good concentration of the grapes while preserving an acidity essential to the balance of the wines. In certain regions, the harvest benefited from a mild late season that allowed full phenolic ripeness to be achieved.
The general style of the wines from the 1928 vintage is often described as powerful, structured and particularly well suited to ageing. The tannins, often present but of great quality, allowed many wines to weather the decades with remarkable stability. Over time, these wines have developed a complex aromatic palette combining candied fruits, tobacco, leather, soft spices and undergrowth.
In Bordeaux, the 1928 vintage is generally considered a very great year, particularly for red wines from the terroirs of the Médoc. Favourable climatic conditions allowed for a slow maturation of cabernet sauvignon, the dominant grape variety on the left bank, giving rise to remarkably structured wines.
The hot and dry summer favoured the concentration of the grapes, while the late season allowed for optimal ripeness to be achieved. The harvest took place in good conditions, making it possible to gather healthy and concentrated grapes.
The 1928 red wines from Bordeaux are distinguished by a significant tannic structure, a solid balance and great aromatic depth. In their youth, these wines were powerful and sometimes austere, but their evolution in bottle has progressively revealed great complexity. Today, when well preserved, they can display aromas of leather, tobacco, cedar, evolved black fruits and spices.
The appellations of the Médoc particularly shone during this vintage, thanks to their gravelly soils favourable to cabernet sauvignon. Some prestigious estates produced wines that have become legendary.
Among the iconic references of the vintage:
Château Latour 1928
Château Lafite Rothschild 1928
Château Mouton Rothschild 1928
Château Margaux 1928
Château Léoville Las Cases 1928
In Burgundy, the 1928 vintage also gave rise to red wines of great quality, marked by the finesse of pinot noir and a sufficient structure to allow a long evolution in bottle.
The climatic conditions allowed for a progressive maturation of the grapes, encouraging a fine aromatic concentration without excess power. The harvest took place in generally favourable conditions, making it possible to gather well-balanced grapes.
Burgundy red wines from 1928 often display an elegant and complex style. Over time, they develop the evolved aromas characteristic of great aged pinot noirs: undergrowth, mushroom, truffle, candied red fruits and delicate spices.
The ageing potential of the vintage proved remarkable in certain great terroirs, particularly on the Côte de Nuits.
Among the estates that produced outstanding wines:
Domaine de la Romanée-Conti 1928
Domaine Armand Rousseau 1928
Domaine Louis Jadot 1928
In the Rhône Valley, climatic conditions also favoured the production of structured and expressive wines. The hot summers of this region allowed for good ripeness of the grapes, particularly for the grenache and syrah varieties.
In the Northern Rhône, the 1928 red wines stood out for their structure, aromatic intensity and ageing potential. Over time, they develop notes of leather, spice, evolved black fruits and sometimes game.
In the Southern Rhône, wines made from blends dominated by grenache often offer a more generous texture and a rich aromatic expression.
Several iconic estates left their mark on this vintage:
Domaine Guigal 1928
Domaine Jaboulet Aîné 1928
Domaine Auguste Clape 1928
Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe 1928
The 1928 vintage also allowed for the production of great sweet wines in the Bordeaux region, particularly in Sauternes and Barsac. The climatic conditions favourable to the development of botrytis made it possible to obtain highly concentrated grapes.
These sweet wines are characterised by their aromatic richness and remarkable ageing potential. Thanks to their sugar concentration and natural acidity, they rank among the wines most capable of enduring the decades.
Over time, these wines develop complex aromas of honey, candied apricot, candied orange, dried fruits and spices.

Château d'Yquem 1928
Château Suduiraut 1928
