Anecdote about this vintage: Vieux Château Certan wines have a natural concentration and require a few years of aging before the first bottles can be opened. Like the greatest Bordeaux wines, they are best enjoyed after 10 to 15 years of age.
Grape variety/Blend: Merlot (~60%), Cabernet Franc (~30%), Cabernet Sauvignon (~10%) (variations are possible from one vintage to another)
Ageing: Woody
Maturity: Old wine
Food and Wine Pairing: Beef and venison

expert's opinions
I have been fortunate enough to taste the legendary 1928 Vieux Chateau Certan twice before, though the previous occasion was almost a decade again in Los Angeles. Served blind, this example reaffirmed its status as a Pomerol undiminished by the passing decade. If anything, the bouquet was even more vigorous than the ones served in L.A., very pure with cigar box scents mixed with briary, iris and even a hint of Indian ink. The palate has weight in the mouth - astonishing after so many years. There is certainly good grip and as I found previously, the Cabernet components appear more conspicuous than coeval vintages. There is a symmetry about this Pomerol, one brilliantly defined with black tea and tobacco interlacing the vestige of black fruit on the finish, with just a hint of volatile acidity on the aftertaste. Utterly sublime, bottles with sound provenance will last a good few more years. Tasted October 2016.

Château informations
Vieux Château Certan, Pomerol, Bordeaux. The Vieux Château Certan estate is located in the heart of the Pomerol plateau. The Vieux Château Certan vineyard consists of 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. This grape variety composition is explained by the desire to find the best possible balance between Merlot and Cabernet Franc. On the Vieux Château Certan terroir, Cabernet Franc reaches an exceptional level of maturity and quality. Owned by the Thienpont family for nearly a century, Vieux Château Certan is managed by Alexandre Thienpont who has made this estate one of the greatest names in Pomerol. A great concentration and a sumptuous aromatic palette characterize the style of Vieux Château Certan. The estate produces a second wine: Gravette de Certan.
