One of the more finesse driven wines in the vertical, the 1985 Hermitage la Chapelle offered beautiful, complex notes of coffee beans, dried meats, potpourri and mint to go with a full-bodied, elegant and seamless feel on the palate. Following on the heels of the monster-sized '89, it still stood out for its purity, fine tannin and length on the finish. It's a beautiful wine drinking at point.

It is harder and harder to get to taste these mature older Northern Rhone wines. Each time I do, I am always thrilled and seldom disappointed and this bottle was no exception. Full-bodied, with a generous blast of cinnamon, 5 spice, smoke, kirsch, thyme, red fruit and black pepper, the wine is juicy, fresh, earthy and frankly, it reminds me of taking ripe, red fruits and squeezing them over rocks.

First bottle From Richard Mayson's cellar (Wine Society bottling): Browny ed. Smoked meat and mocha notes. Really savory combined with decadent decayed fruit. Firm and chewy. Acid and tannins clash a little on the finish. It's still a big wine but drying out. Second bottle From Kate Dugdale's cell : Gentler and more succulent on the palate and with a lovely peppery bite to the undergrowth flavours and aromas. But it's fading. (JH)

For almost two centuries, Paul Jaboulet Aîné has been offering consumers the product of ancestral expertise with excellence at the heart of its strategy. To perpetuate these values, the company strengthens this heritage both in the vineyard through new acquisitions and in the quality of wines while respecting the environment. The diversity of the "lieu-dit" terroirs gives the wine a particular identity through the blending of different plots. Its La Chapelle cuvée, based on the hills of Hermitage, reigns over the Rhône Valley. In the 13th century, returning from the crusades, it welcomed the Chevalier de Stérimberg. Later it would become the family's flagship wine, Hermitage La Chapelle, offering tasters great sensations. The 1961 vintage was ranked among the Twelve legendary bottles of the 20th century, with some bottles and magnums still sleeping at Jaboulet and in cellars around the world. The name Hermitage "La Chapelle" is linked to the small Saint-Christophe chapel overlooking the terraced vineyard dominating the Rhône. These Syrahs are planted on rich and varied soils with a great diversity of terroirs (les Bessards, les Greffieux, le Méal and les Rocoules). It is from the richness of these different terroirs that the complexity of Hermitage La Chapelle is born.
