The 1997 vintage embodies an early and warm year, shaped by a contrasted yet favourable climate that produced seductive and expressive wines. A warm spring set the vines off ahead of schedule, and then staggered harvests brought in ripe grapes with fine skins: the reds emerged supple, round and fragrant, conceived for pleasure rather than long waiting. In Bordeaux, the right bank and the finest terroirs of the Médoc carry the vintage — Petrus and Château Latour offer two accomplished expressions, now at full maturity. But the true peaks of the year are found elsewhere too: in the sweet wines of Sauternes, sculpted by October botrytis, and in the generous Syrahs of the northern Rhône. Yes, the 1997 wines are now at full maturity and can still provide much pleasure, depending on type and region. The 1997 red Bordeaux, especially those from the most prestigious appellations, are smooth and balanced. The 1997 white Burgundies show fine evolution with notes of honey and dried fruits.
The 1997 Sauternes are at their peak and can still age for several decades. This vintage is therefore perfectly suited to lovers of evolved and harmonious wines.
Thanks to an ideal climate for botrytisation, the Sauternais 1997 experienced perfect conditions: alternating morning mists and sunny afternoons. This allowed for natural concentration of sugars and exceptional aromatic complexity.
Estates such as Château d'Yquem 1997, Suduiraut 1997, Rayne-Vigneau 1997 and La Tour Blanche 1997 have produced wines of rarely equalled richness and elegance. The 1997 vintage thus remains an absolute reference for lovers of sweet wines.
The 1997 Sauternes remain the most promising in terms of longevity, capable of ageing for another twenty years or more. Some Bordeaux Grands Crus, such as Petrus 1997, Cheval Blanc 1997, Haut-Brion 1997, Angelus 1997, Pavie Macquin 1997 continue to evolve with elegance.
The 1997 white Burgundies retain fine vitality when from renowned estates, whilst the 1997 Alsace wines still offer a remarkable balance between richness and freshness.
The year 1997 began under ideal climatic conditions: a mild winter and a warm spring led to one of the earliest flowerings of the century. The summer, alternating heat and rainy spells, produced uneven ripeness, but the most rigorous estates were able to take advantage of a fine late season to produce balanced and expressive wines.
The 1997 vintage is recognised for its supple, generous and harmonious wines, with a fine aromatic ripeness. While it does not rival the structure of the 1996 or 2000 vintages, it offers immediate accessibility and certain drinking pleasure, particularly in the 1997 red wines of Bordeaux, Sauternes, Burgundy and the Loire.
In Bordeaux, 1997 is an early and uneven year. An advanced bud break, a rapid flowering and then a contrasted summer produced ripe grapes but with variable concentration, depending on the rigour of sorting and yield management. The resulting reds are supple, round and aromatic, with a seamlessly integrated tannic structure: these are wines of charm, to be drunk today rather than kept. The right bank, with its early-ripening Merlots, and the finest terroirs of the Médoc fared best.
On the right bank, Château Pavie 1997 and Château Clinet 1997 capture that velvety ripeness of Saint-Émilion and Pomerol. Among the dry whites, the Graves shine: Domaine de Chevalier blanc 1997 offers a taut and refined expression. But the true summit of the Bordeaux vintage lies elsewhere, in the sweet wines: in Sauternes and Barsac, botrytis — noble rot — established in October produced, depending on the harvest date, wines that were initially concentrated and then fully botrytised, hailed by Decanter as the finest achievement in Sauternes since 1990.
In Burgundy too, 1997 is a sunny and early year. Ripeness came quickly, with low acidity: the reds from the Côte de Nuits as well as the Côte de Beaune are round, supple and immediately appealing, without the nervous tension of the great ageing vintages. The whites, rich and ripe, offer a generous volume that should be savoured without waiting too long.
From the great terroirs of Gevrey-Chambertin, DUGAT-PY Vieilles vignes 1997 produces a full-bodied red with a caressing texture, while in the Côte de Beaune, Olivier Leflaive 1997 represents the pinnacle of Puligny-Montrachet Chardonnay, rich and refined. These are Burgundies to be chosen estate by estate, targeting those that have retained their freshness.
The northern Rhône was a particular success in 1997. A warm season brought the Syrahs to fine ripeness, giving Côte-Rôtie and Guigal La Mouline 1997, Hermitage and Cornas open wines with ripe fruit and silky textures, of immediate appeal. This is a vintage made for pleasure: most of these wines are now at their peak and are best opened sooner rather than later.
In Cornas, Les Ruchets 1997 by Jean-Luc Colombo embodies this dense and velvety style, driven by ripe Syrahs and a seamlessly integrated structure. The southern Rhône, more uneven that year, is best chosen from its finest cuvées, in the same spirit of accessible indulgence.
1997 was a particular success for the Loire and Alsace. The warmth of the year ripened the Loire Chenin Blanc: the sweet wines — Coteaux du Layon, Quarts de Chaume, Vouvray — reach a remarkable richness, carried by well-established botrytis, among the finest achievements of the decade. The same sunny season produced beautiful Saumur-Champigny reds and, in Alsace, ripe Rieslings, Gewurztraminers and Pinot Gris, with superb late-harvest wines.
In the Loire, Clos Rougeard Le Bourg 1997 represents the pinnacle of Cabernet Franc from Saumur-Champigny, a dense and refined red built for ageing; in Alsace, the Cuvée Frédéric Émile by Trimbach 1997 exemplifies terroir-driven Riesling, straight and mineral. Two signatures that sum up the richness of these wine regions in 1997, between indulgent sweet wines and great wines for keeping.
