350 years of history define Château Rauzan-Ségla. It all began in 1661, when Pierre Desmezures de Rauzan, founder and visionary, bought the noble house of Gassies, attached a few vineyard plots to it and gave his name to the property. At that time, he was a merchant, farmer, vineyard owner and had held the position of manager at Château Margaux and Château Latour.
The heirs of the Rauzan family succeeded one another for nearly 2 centuries and contributed to spreading the fame of the estate's wines throughout the world.
From the French Revolution and following the marriage of Catherine de Rauzan to Baron Pierre Louis de Ségla in 1785, the Château changed its name and became Château Rauzan-Ségla.
From 1866, Château Rauzan-Ségla became the property of Eugène Durand-Dassier, a man of faith and business, then numerous owners succeeded at the head of the estate during the 20th century: Frédéric Cruse, Philippe de Meslon, John Holt.
During their ownership, the Cruse family modified the spelling of the estate's name, Rauzan became Rausan before reappearing again in 1940. The two names even coexisted on certain vintages.
CHANEL acquired Château Rauzan-Ségla in 1994 and then Château Canon, a Premier Grand Cru Classé of Saint-Emilion in 1996. The Wertheimer family undertook significant modernisation works and launched marketing operations including the design of the Château Rauzan-Ségla 2009 vintage label by Karl Lagerfeld.
The vineyard of Château Rauzan-Ségla benefits from a rich and exceptional terroir. Its proximity to the Gironde estuary brings freshness, while the soils composed of Garonne gravels capture heat during the day and release it at night, thus promoting optimal grape maturity. Beneath this gravel soil, a thin layer of clay allows for deep rooting of the vines.
The 70 hectares of Château Rauzan-Ségla's vineyard are planted with the 4 main Bordeaux grape varieties: 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 1% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot.
After several years of sustainable viticulture, the vineyard has fully transitioned to organic farming since the 2017 harvest.
The wines produced by the estate are renowned for the refinement and complexity brought by one of the richest terroirs of Margaux.
The Grand Vin red wine of Château Rauzan-Ségla expresses delicacy and freshness. Its aromas have floral and red fruit notes, its tannins are silky, this wine is a perfect balance between structure and finesse. It is known for its great ageing potential.
