CARRUADES DE LAFITE 1997

The spring weather conditions were ideal. And the harvests were early and sunny, allowing us to be able to control the health of the grapes affected by a fairly rainy summer. The result is a 1997 vintage that is expressive on the nose and at the start of the palate.
The second wine of Château Lafite Rothschild, the "Carruades de Lafite" 1997, expresses a powerful, firm structure, with attractive tannins. This second wine from Lafite Rothschild is made from 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
The 1997 Carruades de Lafite (a blend of 32% Merlot, with the rest mainly Cabernet Sauvignon and a small portion of Cabernet Franc) maintains its reputation as one of Bordeaux's better second wines. The color is dark ruby with purple nuances. The wine is soft, fleshy, and round, with more up-front fat than Lafite, but not nearly the length or perfume. Supple, with low acidity, and an easy-going, silky finish, it will drink well between now and 2006. Lafite's harvest occurred between September 8 (beginning with the Merlot) and October 2. For some Cabernet Sauvignon parcels, there were an exceptional 135 days (the norm being 105-110 days) between the flowering and harvest. This estate, which made a profoundly great 1996, utilized only 28% of its harvest for the 1997 grand vin. Moreover, the selection for the second wine, Carruades, was also severe.

Jean-Marc Quarin March - 1999
Jean-Marc Quarin
Dark red. Good intensity. Net. Medium intensity. Fruity like strawberry jam. Medium intensity. Fruit associated with wood. Touch a little green. Full of charm, with a runny character, the fruit is permanent and the wine goes through the mouth with great ease, offering flavors of ink on the finish and above all no drying out. Medium persistence. It's good without being complex and it swallows itself.

Château Lafite Rothschild
Château Lafite Rothschild

Château Lafite Rothschild1st growth in 1855, is one of Bordeaux's most famous chateaux. It shares with the greatest the top of the official classification of 1855. Located on the Pauillac appellation, the vineyard of 103 ha is divided into three parcels: the hills surrounding the Château, the Carruades plateau to the west and a parcel of 4.5 ha in the neighboring town of Saint-Estèphe. Most of the terroir is composed of fine and deep gravel mixed with Aeolian sand on a tertiary limestone bedrock. The grape varieties are 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. The average age of the vineyards of the great wine is 40 years, the 20 ha of young vines (less than 10 years) being used for the development of the second wine. There are also extremely old plots of over 80 years, one called "La Gravière" dating back to 1886. The maturation of the wine is carried out for 18 to 20 months in 100% new oak barrels. Lafite Rothschild produces about 15,000 to 20,000 cases per year. The estate also produces a second wine, the Carruades de Lafite, for around 25,000 to 30,000 cases. The name of the second wine of Chateau Lafite Rothschild of the "plateau Carruades, where stood a group of plots, which was bought by the castle in the nineteenth century, and which adjoined the rump Castle. The "Carruades de Lafite" were once called "Moulin des Carruades", then take the name, Carruades de Lafite.

The mythical vintages of Chateau Lafite Rothschild are 1921, 19451959198219861988 and 2000, 2005 in recent years.
